Pope Innocent X (Latin: Innocentius Decimus; 6 May 1574 – 7 January 1655), born Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, was an Italian cleric of the Roman Catholic Church and the 237th Pope from 1644 to 1655.[1]

Early life

Pamphilij was born in Rome in 1574.[2] He was a great-great-great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI[3]

He graduated from the Collegio Romano before entering a career in the church.[2]

Cardinal

In 1629, he was raised to the rank of Cardinal.[2]

Cardinal Pamphilij was elected pope in 1644;[2] and he chose to be called Innocent X.
