Community Update August 25,2024 (2024)

Good afternoon, Wildcat Families!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. It is hard to believe it is already the last week of August! Just a reminder that we do not have school on Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day.

We had our first home football game last Friday night. We did not get the win we wanted, but there was some great school spirit from the students and community! I will remind our students that I expect our student sections at all events to be respectful. I will not tolerate profanities or hateful comments. There was some of that on Friday night, and those students were addressed. In addition, I expect that we will show respect and kindness to all of our students- respect to our team playing, to our cheerleaders, to our dance team, and our band. I will encourage our student section to pause and show respect and cheer for our band while performing. In addition to our dance, cheer, and sports teams, our band students also work hard throughout the week to prepare for their performance, and they deserve appreciation and respect when they perform. I aim to instill that sense of community in our school amongst all our students.

If you have had a child at Central, you will know that my administrative team and I have a 24-hour rule when it comes to communication, but we usually can respond quicker than that. We always address concerns you may have quickly and thoroughly. If you have any concerns you need to discuss, first reach out to the teacher, and if it is not resolved, reach out to the grade-level assistant principal or me. Our teachers’ priority is taking care of students in the classroom during class time, but they will respond as soon as they can. I ask that you try to resolve issues with me or an admin at the school level before calling a board member or someone at the Central Office. I take responsibility for our school, and I need to know about concerns or issues. I appreciate our Wildcat families! We have the best community!

Our theme this year is “Raise the Rock.” We want to raise expectations and accountability for all to help all students experience success in academics, arts, service, and athletics.

School Goals- Raise the Rock!
- Raise achievement and growth for all students on EOCs in English 1, English 2, Biology, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry.
- ACT- The senior class will raise the ACT average from 19.7 to 21.
- Achieve under 20% for Chronic Absenteeism.
- Continue pursuit of Ready Graduate for students, encouraging industry certifications. Continue encouraging students to enroll in Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes. Achieve continued growth and success rate for students in AP courses.
- Continue building a school culture where we hold students and staff accountable.

Cross Country News!
The cross-country team would like to invite you and your family to our annual 5K fun run fundraiser. It is one of our more fun fundraisers and not only raises money, but allows us to get together. If you have any XC athletes in your class, they would love to see you out there running and would likely run the race with you if you requested. Further, if you have any kids or family members that are runners, please share this with them.

The race will be 9/21 at 8:00 AM. The entry fee is $25. We are also doing a tot race again for kids ages 1-5 at 9:00 AM. This race is free and all kids will get popsicles at the end!

Our XC teams raced Saturday morning at a tough course in Clarksville. All athletes ran well for our first meet. Noah Smith took 2nd and Marek Driver took 10th for the boys. The boys' team placed 4th overall. Carly Mitchell placed 2nd and Carleigh Hughes placed 3rd for the girls. The girls' team placed 2nd overall. Max Oestricher ran a PR by 27 seconds. Most of them have been training since June and have been dedicated enough to make it to 6:30 AM practices before school. Their hard work is paying off and we are proud of them!

Mr. WCHS
Congratulations to Mr. WCHS, Isaas Diehl. Runner up was James Nelson. Our fan favorite was Josh Lechner. It was a fun night, and we thank the Dance Team for making the night happen!

    2. Illness of an immediate family member, with immediate family defines as a parent, sibling, or grandparent
    3. Death of an immediate family member or other individual with the principal's permission
    4. Extreme weather conditions

    9. Parent/Guardian military deployment or return
    10. Summons, subpoenas, or court orders

Documentation for School Absences
Written documentation supporting reasons for absences must be submitted to the school within three (3) school days. Even though a parent may verbally contact the school, a written notice must also be sent to the school or e-mailed to the attendance clerk. Written documentation must include the reason for the absence, date, time, parent signature, and phone number. After the three (3) days have elapsed, the absences will become permanently unexcused.

Please note that vacations do not fall under the excused category.

To ensure students are safely and accurately checked out during the school day, we will be implementing the following-

Student Drivers:
Paper notes for early dismissal must be turned in before 10 am on the day of dismissal.
Skyward notifications must be submitted before 11 am on the day of dismissal.

All Students:
No student can be signed out after 3 pm without approval from the administration.

Tardy Policy
We want students to be in their classrooms when the school day begins at 8:30.
Tardy Discipline Procedures:
Every Unexcused Tardy will result in a tardy detention.
On the 8th tardy, the student will serve full block detention during their lunch block.
On the 13th tardy, the student will serve a full day in ISS.
On the 18th tardy, the student will be referred to Dr. Ankney and receive OSS.

Dress Code
We have seen a huge improvement with students being in dress code! The dress code is a Wilson County policy, and we will enforce it. On Monday, if your child is out of dress code, they will be asked to change. If it persists, we will assign discipline as per the code of conduct. Below is the Wilson County Schools Dress Code Policy.

The goal of Wilson County Schools is to create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for an educational setting. With this in mind, the following conditions have been adopted for students attending schools within our District. Items of clothing not specifically covered in the list below can be prohibited at the discretion of the administration. Students in violation of the dress code will be required to change into clothes that meet the expectations outlined here. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

Prohibited dress shall include, but is not limited to:
- Any attire that depicts, promotes, or advertises gang affiliation, illegal activity, illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco, sexual references, offensive words or designs, and other clothing that is disruptive to the learning environment;
- Clothing designed to be worn as undergarments or visible undergarments;
- Headwear, including but not limited to, hats, bandanas, scarves, earmuffs, hoods, sunglasses, or any other head covering (an exception will be made for headwear worn for religious beliefs or medical necessity), except as may be permitted in advance by school administration;
- Shirts and blouses that leave the midriff or chest bare or do not extend below the navel in length;
- Sleeveless shirts with straps less than 2 inches in width or without a shirt underneath;
- Pants or shorts worn below the waist;
- Pajama pants or sleepwear, except as may be permitted in advance by school administration;
- Skirts, dresses, or shorts that are shorter than 5 inches above the knee;
- Clothing with visible holes more than 5 inches above the knee (unless there is a layer of clothing under the hole);
- Inappropriate footwear that are considered unsafe, including slippers;
- Jewelry or accessories that are considered unsafe or inappropriate to the learning environment;
- Shoes that have wheels
- Any other garments or accessories that would be a distraction to the orderly educational process.

Parents will be notified if students are inappropriately dressed. Students who continually violate the dress code will be subject to disciplinary measures pursuant to the Code of Conduct.

Cell Phone Policy
All teachers are required to have a classroom cell phone policy that keeps devices out of students' hands during instructional time. Electronic devices will not be used in the classroom except for educational purposes as directed by the teacher.

If a student is using their personal electronic device during class time the teacher will confiscate the device. For the first offense it will be returned to the student at the end of class and the parent will be notified by the teacher. For offenses beyond the first the grade level administrator will be contacted to retrieve the device and the student will receive disciplinary action. For administrators to take disciplinary action on a student's cell phone, the parent must have first been contacted by the teacher unless it is an extreme case.

Students will be permitted to use cell phones before and after school, during class changes, and lunch. Students will not be permitted to take cell phones with them to the restroom during class. Teachers are required to have a policy in place to keep students from taking cell phones to the restroom.

From Transportation
I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend so far. I wanted to see if you all could send a reminder to the students, that they are not allowed to bring anything on the bus that can't be held in their lap and three people still sit in the seat. At this moment larger band equipment and we just do not have the room to store it on the buses.

Seniors, Class of 2025:
Formal and Casual Senior Pictures for the School Yearbook
It’s that time! If you haven't already, seniors can start taking their senior pictures for the school yearbook! Loveless Photography in Murfreesboro is our contract photographer, and we only use pictures from them. We cannot accept photos from outside vendors or photographers for the yearbook. The deadline to take images is November 25th. If Loveless has not taken your senior pictures by then, you will not be pictured in the yearbook. Please note that Loveless offers different packages at their studio in Murfreesboro, and you can have props such as sports equipment, pets, awards, etc; you can wear multiple outfits and do different poses, and they have over 30 different backgrounds that can be used to take senior pictures, so make sure you take advantage of your senior portraits! Loveless will provide a formal drape for ladies and a formal suit cover for gentlemen. Ladies will just need a tank top ready, and gentlemen will need a white shirt (to be under the button-up and suit they will provide).

Counseling News
This message is a reminder about the district's "School Counseling Online Consent Form" and the "Non-emergent Care Online Consent Form" located in Skyward Family Access. If you have acknowledged these forms and have indicated your choices, then you can disregard this message. Please keep reading if you have not. Thank you!

Our school counseling program is a team effort involving the school counselor, school leaders, parents and other educators. Together, they create a supportive environment to help students succeed.

School counselors are specially trained educators who address issues within our schools that affect student learning. They work with students to support their academic, social, and emotional development, as well as their preparation for college and careers. Each school counselor dedicates their skills, time, and energy to providing direct and support services to students, and our program maintains high standards for academic and personal development.

School counselors and other staff may provide one-on-one counseling support to students if needed. Under the Family Rights and Responsibilities Act, if your child requires personalized support, such as academic, social, and emotional health support, as well as post-secondary preparation, our school staff will need your permission to provide that support.

To ensure our students have the best support available, we are asking our parents to complete the School Counseling Support Permission Form by August 30, 2024. You can locate the form in your Skyward Family Access portal under Online Forms. Please click here to access the Skyward Family Access portal: https://link.zixcentral.com/u/e75baf31/sh_V2jFf7xGTfJ4IXNGfSw?u=https%3A%2F%2Fskyward.wcschools.com%2Fscripts%2Fwsisa.dll%2FWService%3DwsEAplus%2Ffwemnu01.w

Our counselors are committed to maintaining an open line of communication with parents. If you have any questions or concerns about your child, then please do not hesitate to contact your school counselor.

The Family Rights and Responsibilities Act can be located here: https://link.zixcentral.com/u/460a58ab/UsqV2jFf7xGTfJ4IXNGfSw?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwcschools0-my.sharepoint.com%2Fpersonal%2Fcothronj_wcschools_com%2F_layouts%2F15%2Fonedrive.aspx%3Fid%3D%252Fpersonal%252Fcothronj%255Fwcschools%255Fcom%252FDocuments%252FDesktop%252Fpc1061%252Epdf%26parent%3D%252Fpersonal%252Fcothronj%255Fwcschools%255Fcom%252FDocuments%252FDesktop%26ga%3D1

Also located in Skyward Family Access is the "Non-Emergent Care Consent Form." This would allow your child to receive non-emergent care from the school's nurse.

We kindly ask that you access these forms (if you haven't already) and make your selections by Friday, August 30th.
