To the editor:

I’m surprised that RCT was “surprised as anyone” that Trump moved to end birthright citizenship.  It’s absolutely aligned with every bit of his rhetoric since entering the political stage.  

Moreover, it’s perhaps the least troubling of Trump’s recent moves.  RCT expresses “slight trepidation” regarding the change to birthright citizenship. I hope there’s more than slight trepidation with regard to the President leaving open the possibility that he would use military force to retake the Panama Canal or acquire Greenland.  The mere suggestion that this is possible gives every bad actor globally license to take whatever they want by force. It effectively greenlights China to take Taiwan, and endorses Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His thoughtless comment immediately created destabilization.  

We have begun what I am 100% sure historians will look back on as a period of America at its very worst.
