doola is hiring a Remote Software Engineer Backend
\nWhat we're looking for\n\n\nDo you remember the thrill and further delight that you got from solving your first problems by programming a solution to them? The feeling you got when you saw it was working? We want to deliver that to our users when they start their business, but in a very streamlined and straightforward interface. We want to create the infrastructure that allows business owners to launch their company seamlessly. And also operate it hassle-free while keeping it compliant. Today, the infrastructure and services are at our hands to build these software layers, but we need a great engineer to help us deliver on this promise.\n\n\nYou'll build and maintain our backend apps: our Admin Panel, our API, and several other services that form part of our automation, that creates companies, connects with banking APIs, and the IRS (Internal Revenue Service), using technologies like NodeJS, DynamoDB, and Puppeteer.\n\n\n\nWhat you will do\n* You'll work with others to build new product features from start to finish: through conception, research, implementation, and maintenance. For example, you might create an internal micro-service to recognize specific legal documents coming back to us from a particular state (e.g., Wyoming).\n* You'll help improve performance and reliability or polish existing features. For example, you might make it easier to select different add-ons on the user sign-up flow that picks their final order.\n* You'll build internal tools to support simplicity and productivity for the whole team. Site Reliability Engineer (AWS)\nRemote, located in the UTC +/- 2 region \n\nAt Snowplow, we are on a mission to empower people to differentiate with data. We provide the technology to enable our customers to take control of their data and empower them to do amazing things with it.\n\nThere are tens of thousands of pipelines using our open source pipeline worldwide, collecting data emitted from over half a million sites. Running on AWS and GCP data technologies, it is ideal for data teams who want to manage their data in real-time and in their own cloud. We also collect, validate, enrich and load in the region of 5 billion events for our customers each day and help them on their Snowplow journey through our management console. \n\nTo support our ongoing growth, we are now looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to join our Tech Ops Team. You’ll be taking the lead on all things AWS including development and improvements of the current stack and rolling out new features - all whilst keeping these environments running smoothly. We would love to hear from you if the idea of programmatically controlling thousands of remote production environments excites you!.\n\nThe Opportunity: \n\nOur Private SaaS offering has grown significantly over the past year and we now orchestrate and monitor Snowplow event pipelines across hundreds of customer-owned AWS & GCP sub-accounts. Each account has its own individualised and optimised stack and all are capable of processing many billions of events per month.\n\nWe are looking for another SRE to help us grow to managing 1,000 and then 10,000 AWS, GCP and (in the future) Azure accounts. You will be pioneering solutions to managing estates of this size through cutting edge monitoring and automation. You’ll work closely with our Tech Ops Lead on all aspects of our proprietary deployment, orchestration and monitoring stacks.\n\nTech Ops has two areas of responsibility: the centralised services we provide customers and their pipeline infrastructure hosted in their own AWS or GCP accounts. Within both domains we are striving to increase service reliability, fulfil customer requests in a timely fashion, and automate recurring tasks. Task automation is essential as our customer base grows, because our infrastructure estate scales linearly with our customer numbers, unlike most software businesses.\n\nThe challenge of automating the maintenance and deployment of thousands of individualised stacks is an enormously ambitious undertaking and a hugely exciting infrastructure automation challenge you’re unlikely to find anywhere else!\n\nThe environment you’ll be working in:\n\nOur company values are Transparency, Honesty, Ownership, Inclusivity, Empowerment, Customer-centricity, Growth and Technical Excellence. These aren’t just words we plucked out of thin air, we came up with them together as a company and are continually looking to find new ways to weave these into our day to day operations. From flexible hours and working locations to the way we give feedback, we’re passionate about building a company that supports both company and individual development.\n\nWhat you’ll be doing:\n\n- Strategising and innovating around the Private SaaS model, helping Snowplow to plan for the future. \n- Collaborating closely with our team of SREs and other teams around the business to ensure we continue to provide our customers with an excellent service. \n- Maintaining and developing our growing Terraform infrastructure-as-code stacks which we use to deploy infrastructure for all internal and client use cases\n- Maintaining our internal infrastructure stacks which include the HashiCorp suite as well as our Snowplow Insights UI and VPNs\n- Improving the resilience and healing ability of our infrastructure estate.\n- Owning your share of support tickets and participation in an on-call rotation to help mitigate anything else and help us serve our client base 24/7.\n- Being a key part of our response to high-severity internal or customer incidents, ensuring we meet all SLAs\n\nWhat you bring to the team:\n\n- Has worked with AWS in a production capacity - experience in GCP and/or Azure is a bonus\n- Has worked with Terraform, CloudFormation or some form of infrastructure-as-code tooling\n- Any experience with the HashiCorp stack (Vault, Consul, Nomad) and understanding their role in infrastructure automation is a bonus\n- Has worked with Docker and is familiar with container-based architectures\n- Knowledgeable about the Linux operating system and how to manage servers in a production capacity\n- Knowledgeable about Cloud networking principles and how to troubleshoot issues in this space\n- Comfortable scripting in one or more of: Bash, Python, Ruby or Perl\n- Comfortable programming in one or more of: Java, Scala, Golang or Python\n\nWhat you’ll get in return\n\n- A competitive package based on experience, including share options\n- 25 days of holiday a year (plus bank holidays)\n- MacBook or Dell XPS 13/15\n- Two fantastic company Away Weeks in a different European city each year (the last one was in November 2019 in Bratislava)\n- Work alongside a supportive and talented team with the opportunity to work on cutting edge technology and challenging problems\n- Grow and develop in a fast-moving, collaborative organisation\n- Enjoy fun events in and around London organised by our Cultural Work Committee\n- If based in London, convenient office location in central London (Aldgate) and a continuous supply of Pact coffee and healthy snacks \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

\nAt Snowplow, we are on a mission to empower people to use data to differentiate. We are able to provide technology which enables customers to not only control their data, but allows them to do amazing things with that control.\n\nAs part of that effort, we're changing the way that people do digital analytics by moving companies away from one-size-fits-all vendors, such as Google Analytics and Adobe, to dictate what should be done with their data and enabling them to collect and own their data themselves.\n\nThe opportunity\n\nOur Managed Service offering has grown significantly over the last year, and we now orchestrate and monitor the Snowplow event pipeline across more than 100 customer-owned AWS accounts, with individual accounts processing many billions of events per month.\n\nWe are looking for our second Site Reliability Engineer to help us grow to managing 1,000 and then 10,000 AWS, GCP and Azure accounts. You’ll work closely with our Tech Ops Lead, on all aspects of our proprietary deployment, orchestration and monitoring stack.\n\nThe team and mission:\n\nTechnical Operations at Snowplow is responsible for two distinct domains:\n\n* Snowplow’s internal infrastructure, which powers Snowplow Insights, CI/CD, the Snowplow website, and our support tooling, all running on AWS\n\n* Our customers’ Snowplow-related infrastructure, running in their own AWS account\n\n\n\nWithin both domains, Tech Ops at Snowplow is striving to increase service reliability, fulfil customer requests in a timely fashion, and automate recurring tasks. Task automation is essential as our customer base grows, because our “infrastructure estate” scales linearly with our customer numbers, unlike most software businesses.\n\nOur roadmap includes:\n\n\n* Deploying, orchestrating and monitoring Snowplow on GCP, Azure and on-premise, not just AWS\n\n* “One click” infrastructure deployment and maintenance\n\n* Building self-healing and self-upgrading infrastructure, which learns how to optimize itself for cost, performance and reliability\n\n\n\n\nThis is an enormously ambitious undertaking but also, we hope, a hugely exciting infrastructure automation challenge!\n\nTechnologies:\n\nToday, our in-house stack uses pragmatic technologies including Docker, Ansible, Consul, CloudFormation, bash and Golang to manage our internal and customer infrastructure.\n\nFor our next level of automation, we are now exploring tools such as Terraform, Kubernetes and Vault.\n\nResponsibilities:\n\n* The development of software for the purposes of automating, monitoring and maintaining client-deployed and Snowplow-internal infrastructure and services\n\n* Providing deep technical support to internal and client teams\n\n* Performing planned upgrades and modifications to customer infrastructure\n\n* Handling high-severity internal or customer incidents, ensuring we meet all SLAs\n\n\n\nWithin the software engineering side you will be responsible for the implementation, deployment and stability of your systems and services. You will own software end to end with a high expectation of ownership over anything that is deployed.\n\nWithin the operational side you will join our on-call process for incident resolution, and be in the assignment for the regular client infrastructure work, with a strong mandate to continuing automation.\n\nWhat we are looking for:\n\nThis role will be a great fit for somebody who:\n\n\n* Has deep knowledge of Linux, networking, containers and similar, able to troubleshoot complex problems on individual servers and distributed systems\n\n* Has worked with at least one of: Amazon Web Services, GCP or Azure\n\n* Has been part of an on-call rotation\n\n* Has interacted directly with customers to solve their specific technical issues\n\n* Is comfortable scripting in one or more of: Bash, Python, Ruby or Perl\n\n* Is comfortable programming in one or more of: Java, Scala, Golang or Python\n\n\n\n\nThis role would be a great fit for a software engineer or systems administrator who wants to transition into a full SRE role.\n\nSecurity:\n\nThe integrity of our customers' systems and data underpin everything we do at Snowplow. As part of their probation, candidates will be put through a full background security check.\n\nOut-of-hours work:\n\nAn important part of this role relates to out-of-hours work, particularly around:\n\n* Performing planned upgrades and modifications to customer infrastructure outside of their working hours\n\n* Being on-call to handle high-severity internal or customer incidents, ensuring we meet all SLAs\n\n\n\nThe on-call process for the Tech Ops team is still evolving; we will discuss these requirements with short-listed candidates.\n\nWhat you’ll get in return:\n\n\n* Competitive package based on experience\n\n* 25 days holiday a year plus bank holidays\n\n* The freedom to work wherever suits you best\n\n* Two fantastic company away-weeks a year\n\n* Working alongside a strong and talented team\n\n\n\n\nOffice-specific:\n\n\n* Convenient central Shoreditch location\n\n* Continuous supply of Pact coffee\n\n* Regular mystery events\n\n* MacBook\n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

Instances of tournaments cannot be created by players, they are automatically created based on a schedule, such as every day at every hour, half past the hour\n \n \n * every admin-only item can be set with a custom rake, but the default is 1%\n \n \n * Bonus Credit\n* BTC credit which players cannot cash out but can use to play against other players, join tournaments etc. Rake is not collected for any bets placed with bonus money, games played with partially bonus and partially normal money are charged rake based on the amount of money which was considered normal money.\n\n \n * Gamification Layer\n * allow creation of leaderboards based on certain statistics such as amount of bets with time-based payouts to the leaders and tracking/reporting of previous winners with leaderboard snapshots.\n * Level system\n * Player can earn levels based on XP points and challenges completed\n * XP (experience points) and create a level system to allow players to level up. When players level up they are given bonus credit\n * The formula for XP is: (# of uBTC (0.001 BTC == 1 uBTC) won plus # of bits wagered) divided by 2. For tournament entries, 10 % of the number of uBTC won.\n * Players who would gain less than 1 XP point for a particular game/tournament are awarded 0 XP \n * Players can only level up if they reach the required # of XP points AND complete the level challenges ( see below)\n \n \n * Level challenges\n * Each level has 3 quantitative requirements before leveling up. Example: the # of wins, total amount wagered, and etc. \n * Once the player has reached the level challenges, and gained the XP necessary to level up, the leveling up event happens NOT automatically but by user action. The user is notified that they can level up.\n * Leveling up bonus: Upon leveling up, user can select from one of a list of bonuses for their account. The list will be arbitrary and at least 10 items long, and include things like new avatars, BTC bonuses for other parts of the site (eg: bonus money for poker room), or bonus money for use in the backgammon room.\n \n \n \n \n * Leagues:\n* Teams can be created and named by any player, and joined by any other player. This results in a league of teams, and a Match is always running between these teams, which culminates in a monthly payout based on the number of points accrued by teams during 1 month period, beginning on 1st of each month and ending on 11:59:59 of last day of that month.\n * Only Players can win points. The total amount of points from all players in a team = the teams number of points\n * The top 3 teams in a league at the end of the league cycle will receive a prize, similar to the leaderboard prize, the league scoreboard must have a snapshot feature so that previous league results can be displayed.\n * How to win points: the program should allow for arbitrary rules to be declared, based on per-round,per-game and per-tournament statistics such as wins/losses. Customized code should be easily placed.\n \n \n\n \n \n \n * Game Logic\n * Refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backgammon#Setup and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backgammon#Movement for complete instructions on how the gameplay moves in rounds and how the chips are set up.\n* We will use only the main variation of backgammon for the purpose of this project. HOWEVER, additional game variations should be available by simply adding a single file and then referencing that file in a field gameType from the data model, which can be selected upon creation of a game (the default is our gameType which we will create in this project)\n\n \n * Steps to play:\n * The base bet amount is negotiated upon starting the game. \n * At any time, a player can double the bet, and the other player either forfeits the game or accepts the doubling. Each player can do this any number of times, until the amount reaches 64x the original base bet (max bet)\n * The minimum base bet is 100 satoshi. The maximum base bet is 1 BTC. These should be configurable.\n * Any time the amount of the bet is changed, the appropriate amount is deducted from both players accounts.\n * The total pot amount is always shown on the screen, and uses a count-up animation, in which the size of the text and the color of the text for the total pot amount are fluctuating and a sound is played.\n \n \n * Both players roll the dice, the higher number goes first, a tie results in re-rolling.\n* When the dice are rolled (at any time) an animation and sound will be played\n\n \n * The first player rolls the dice and then moves his tokens a certain number of times/pips\n * The number of pips and tokens moved depends on the ruleset defined above.\n * In order to move a chip, user will click on the chip he desires to move, and then the available positions he can move that chip to will HIGHLIGHT. The highlighted area being clicked, the chip will move to that area\n * If the chip selected cannot be moved, a red error highlight shows on selected chip\n * If no moves are available, a pertinent message is shown for 2 seconds, followed by the dice passing to the other player\n \n \n * The white and black players maintain a fixed position on the board where the dice move back and forth between these two positions to indicate whose turn it is to take action. \n * A timer with a circular (green-to-red) pattern moves along with a text (EG: 1:14) to indicate time left to act for each player\n * Eventually the players will begin to bear off or finish the game, and when the game is complete, the scores for that round will be displayed, \n * If this is a 1-round game, credits are given immediately to the winner.\n * however if this is a multi-round game, no credits or debits will be made until the game has ended\n \n \n * Player can resign the game at any time\n \n \n * Payouts\n * Single-round game: rake is deducted and tracked in credit transaction to the winner.\n * Multi-round game: rake is deducted after all rounds were played in a single credit transaction to the winner, with corresponding rake amount also tracked.\n * Tournament: see above, arbitrary admin setting\n \n \n \n \n * Idle and Disconnection handling\n * allow a game from the past to be viewed as if it's being played in real time, and stepped through one game-action at a time.\n * Handling timing of moves during a game. \n* Time-bank: player is allowed 15 seconds, and can act faster than 15 seconds. If acting faster than 15 seconds, the remainder is built up and added to the 15 seconds for each additional action. The maximum time bank is 60 seconds. \n\n \n * handling disconnection of players during game, \n * 60-seconds without an action but still connected is considered a forfeit of the game round, 2 of these in a row forfeits the game.\n * Any disconnection without a reconnection within 60 seconds is considered a forfeit of the game round, 2 minutes disconnected is a forfeit of the game. \n * After reconnecting, the entire clock system starts over.\n \n \n * provide tracking of and allow players to cancel or resume disconnected games from a special popup that occurs if there are any games that have been paused due to disconnection\n \n \n \n \n * Player Profile\n * can be viewed for oneself or any other player who has a public profile\n * View/change avatar\n * View my rating/Rate another player\n * Win/loss record of player\n * Disconnect % ( how many times they disconnect or quit during the game )\n * Report a player ( allows player to be flagged for cheating or inappropriate play with an explanation, which is all forwarded to our support team )\n \n \n * discussion forum using telescopeapp.org will allow players to converse about any subject related to the game.\n * in-game player chat (per-table chat rooms, players can mute players , real-time chat moderation, time-based and permanent bans, admin broadcasts to all rooms), \n * area for game instructions (including game rules, how to play, strategy/tips, lobby instructions, house rules, XP+levels+leaderboards)\n \n\nPROPOSED TEAM MEMBERS FROM YOUR TEAM:\n1. full-stack developer who writes Angular2 and Typescript on the front-end and Meteor/TypeScript on the backend.
