Paul falls in love with Ivy. but her father exhibits an intense dislike for him at their very first meeting. He is puzzled, but comes to the conclusion that the old man is envious of his success as a playwright. Paul volunteers to help Silas with his plays, thinking to overcome his prejudice. With a sinister expression on his face, the old man says, "I have a great play in mind. Let us work it out together." Paul is all attention and Old Silas tells what the young man soon realizes is the story of his own life; ruined by a villain who ran away with his wife. Silas agitatedly tells Paul that Fate reserved the cruelest blow of all until the last, tor he has discovered that Ivy, his adopted daughter, has fallen in love with the son, the living image of the scoundrel Carruthers. The old man winds up by saying, "And you are the son; I know of but one fitting climax to the play and that is..." Pulling out a revolver, Silas, in a frenzy, is about to shoot Paul when Ivy enters the room. Silas sinks into a chair and Paul quickly explains her father was acting out one of his plays. He then tells Silas, "The right climax would be to let the son of the man who wronged you marry your adopted daughter." The old man silently nods his head in agreement and as Paul draws Ivy to him in a close embrace, gives the young people his blessing. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
