Organize a "Getting started with Wikimedia language tech volunteering" session for WikiClub Tech India
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

WikiClub Tech India is a program that helps students and educators get involved in Wikimedia projects through technical work. It focuses on encouraging open-source participation and offering skill-building opportunities in areas like programming, localization, and content creation for Wikimedia platforms. This initiative collaborates with IIIT Hyderabad's IndicWiki program.

This task is about introducing students who are part of this club to Wikimedia's language tech volunteering and guiding them on how to get started with meaningful contributions.

Through this session, students will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in volunteering for language-specific Wikimedia projects. After this session, participants will be able to dive into their first tasks.
  • Develop an understanding of internationalization and localization principles, tools, and best practices for creating multilingual software like MediaWiki that can be adapted to various regions and cultures.
  • Gain practical experience with open-source contributions, including making changes, submitting patches, and collaborating with other contributors on platforms like Gerrit and GitHub.
  • Learn how to translate content and make it accessible in various languages.
  • Connect with experts and peers for collaboration and learning.
