Description

CHARLES J. SHUTTLEWORTH, or .sPRINGvILLE, NEWYonK.
Letters Patent Nc.- 92,664, elated July 13, 1869.
IMPROVED HORSE-POWER The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and mking partvof the same.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. Smnrnnwonrn,v
of Springville, in the county of' Erie, 'and Stateof New York, have invented acertainnew and improved Horse- Power; and I do hereby declare that the following is A a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. v
-My invention consists in -the general arrangement of a loose bevel-wheel and pinion von .the gear-frame axis, with the other gearing and gear-frame.
In the drawingsv. Figure I is a central vertical section of my improved horse-power, in line :c a', Fim II. i
Figure II is a plan of the saine. Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures. A is the bevel-gear rim, and A1, the friction-track, cast together with the sam'epitch-line, and supported on suitable standard-SNA2 A2, connecting with base pieces A", which supporting-frame may be cast with the ring' A A1, if desired. Y Bl is a cross-piece, resting uponv and bolted to the base-pieces A. g
This casting supports a central.- vstationary shaft, C, which'forms the axis of the gear-framelD, and of the combined bevel-wheel and pinion E E".
rlhe frame D is a plate casting, constructed with a central cross-piece, D, having a hub, d, at the centre, upwardly through which projects theaxis O, provided with a washerand pin, c and c', lat its upper Aend, to prevent the rising of the frame. v
FF are two bevel-pinions, meshing with the geariim A, and l v F F', two friction-wlieels traversing the track A1.
rIhese pinions and wheels are arranged in pairs, one
of each being keyed together on the same horizontal shaft G, and formed with-the same pitch-line, so as toA revolve together with the same velocity, without any slipping of the friction-,wheels on the track.-
The shafts G haveftheii;bearings in suitable boxes y, on top of the i'ame D, and have mounted on their inner ends bevel-gear wheels HH. These bevel-wheels mesh with the bevel-pinion E between them.
The pinion 4" and wheel E are secured or cast together, and revolve loosely on the shaft C,
The wheel E meshes with a bevel-pinion, I, mounted on a horizontal shaft, J, which has its bearings in -the cross-piece B,"and to which are jointed the tumblingrods K'. l
L L are two sweeps, to which .the horses are attached for operating the power. They may be secured to the gear-frame by'means of a bolt, L, and by casting with the rframe upwardlyprojecting flanges m m, to receive thej end of each lever, and with a similar flange or shoulder, m', which acts as a fuloruni, against which the lever presses.
A greater number of sweeps may be employed,'if desired.
N N are two friction guide-wheels, traversing the inner edge or circumference of the ring A A1, and attached to'projectingears of the gear-frame at opposite points, and in such a position as to best oppose the strain that would otherwise come on the axis C in operating the machine.
The construction and arrangement of -the frictionrollers and the gearing, as before described, enable the gear-frame to be supported by said friction-rollers, whereby the excessive friction which would result from the gearing meshing too deeply, if the frame were not thus supported, isprevented.
y The weight of the gear-frame pressing on the friction-wheels, causes them to act eiiiciently as tractionwheels, in conjunction with the pinions` F, in driving the other gearing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The general larral)gement of the-bevel-gear wheels H'H, wheel and pinion E E, and pinion I, with the Witnesses: o. JQ sHUTmLnvvoRTH.
