Description
PATENTED JUNE 27, 1905.
H. HANSBBRGBR.
WIRE FENCE FASTENING DEVICE.
APPLIGATION FILED DEC. 7, 1904.
ATTORNEYS Nrrnn STATES Jratenteo. June 2'7, 1905.
HENRY HANSBERGER, OF MILLERSPORT, OHIO.
WlRE-FENCE-FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,371, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed December '7, 1904. Serial No. 235,848.
To all 1077,0711, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY I'IANSBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millersport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVire-Fence-Fastening Devices, of which the following is aspecilieation.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in wire-fence-fastening devices.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple fastening device which is applied to each strand-wire and acts in conjunction therewith to form a mutual fastening.
Another feature lies in the provision of a device which may be readily applied and one whose fastening qualities will increase as pressure is brought to bear upon the strand wire or wires.
Finally, the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, eflicient, and simple and comparatively inexpensive to make and one which will not be liable to get out of working order.
I/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a partial perspective view of a metallic post and a portion of a strand-wire, showing my fastening device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening device.
It is to be understood that my improved fastening device may be used with posts of various sizes and shapes, but preferably with metallic posts, although I do not wish to limit the application of my device to a metallic post. It is to be further observed that I may employ as many devices upon a post as there are strand-wires crossing the same, and therefore I have thought it expedient and suificient to simply show and describe one of my fastening devices.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates an angular fence-post, which I have chosen for the purpose of illustration, while the numeral 2 designates the strand wire which crosses the open portion of the fence-post 1, which in this case is V-shaped in plan.
It is apparent that the shape of the post to some extent governs the shape of the fastening device. Thus for use in connection with the above-described post I construct the fastening device as indicated at 3 in the drawings, having a general V shape and provided at its free ends with downwardly-extending hook portions 4, which are inclined slightly rearwardly or toward the apex of the device. The distance from the rear faces of the hooks 4 to the inner angle of the apex of the device 3 is shorter than the distance from the outer angle of the apex of the fence-post 1 to the outer ends thereof, as clearly set forth in Fig. 1. Thereby when the device is applied to the fence-post, the hooks 4 being caught over the strand-wire 2, the latter is drawn around the sides of the fence-post and toward the apex thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The strand-wire 2 being under tension, it is apparent that a mutual fastening is had, as the fastening device tends to draw the wire around the sides of the post and bind the same thereon, while the wire being under tension tends to draw the fastening device into contact with the post, and it is obvious that the greater the tension or force upon the strand-wire 2 the stronger and more secure the fastening is made.
.In applying the fastening device I preferably-employ a suitable tool or implement for drawing the strand-wire around the sides and outer edges of the fence-post, thus allowing the fastening device 3 to be slipped down the trivial and has no bearing in any Way upon the invention.
I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth, as I may make various changes in the same Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having noW fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the class described, a post V- shapcd in cross-section, a fence-Wire passing across the foot of the V and a rigid V-shaped fastener provided With hooks at its free ends,
said hooks engaging the said fence-Wire adjacent to its point of contact With the post and holding it in contact therewith, the sides of the said fastener, from the apex to the inside of the hooked portion, being shorter than the sides of the V-shaped post, whereby the fence- Wire is bent at a sharp angle at its point of contact With the said post, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY HANSBERGER. In presence of M. B. SoHLEY, A. L. PHELPS.
