ROLL=HOLDER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,324, dated November 12, 1901.

Be it known that I, HORACE MOKAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana,have invented a new and useful Roll- Holder, of which the following is a specitica tion.

My invention relates to'an improvement in means for holding a roll or strip of material.

The object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means for holding strip material in such manner that any desired length of the strip may be conveniently' and easily removed therefrom.

In the drawings I have illustrated a device especially designed to hold a ticketstripas, for instance, streetcar tickets or mileage; but the structure is such as to be equally applicable as a holder of toilet or any other rolled material.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective View thereof. Fig. 2 is an axial section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. Lt is a similar section'with a ticket-strip in position.

In the drawings, 5 indicates a tubular body having a peripheralaxial slit 6 and a head 7. Mounted within body 5 is a cover-slide 8, having a pin 9, which projects through a circumferential groove 10 in body 5.

The open end of body 5 is closed by adetachable head 11, carrying a central spindle 12, which is split longitudinally in halves. The free end of spindle 12 is tapered, as at 13, and immediately inside of the tapered por tion is provided with a circumferential groove 14. I-Iead 7 is provided with a socket 15, in the open end of Which is an annular flange 16, adapted to lie within groove let. The internal diameter of the `flange 16 is somewhat less than the normal diameter of groove 14, so that when end 13 is forced into socket 15 said end snaps by flange 16 and the flange clamps the two halves of the spindle 12 together. In order to hold the parts well together, head 11 should be provided with a shoulder 17, tting within the open end of body 5. As soon as the end 13 of the spindle 12 is Withd rawn from socket 15 the two halves of the spindle 12 spring apart, so that the end of a ticket-strip 18 or strip of any material may be inserted Serial No.` 54.4.18. between the two halves. When this is done, the end 13 of the spindle l2 is returned into socket 15, flange 16 operating to clamp the two halves of the spindle together, so as to Vhold the end of the strip therebetween.

The insertion of the strip may be accomplished Without entirely withdrawing spindle 12 from body 5, if desired, one end of the strip being introduced into the body through slit 6, and when the endhas been clamped between the two halves of the spindle 12 the ticket may be rolled inside the body by operating head 11 and the spindle.

If desired, the ticket or other strip may be ready rolled, in which case a central opening should be left in the roll and the inner end of the strip bent diametrically across the opening. The two halves of the flange 12 may then be caused to straddle this inner end, the roll being slipped over the spindle and the whole being inserted in the body 5 and the end 13 of the spindle 12 pressed into socket 15, thus securely holding the strip.

In use cover 8 is normally arranged so as to close slit G. When the operator desires to remove a portion of the strip, the cover 8 is retracted by means of the button 9 and head 11 is rotated in the direction of Winding of the roll until the free end of the strip springs out of the slit 6. The strip may then be forced out of slit 6 by rotating head 11 in the opposite direction or by pulling upon the strip. Any desired means may be provided to enable .the operator to tear off as much of the strip as he desires, either by perforating the strip at predetermined points or by sharpening or serrating one edge or the other of slit 6.

It will be readily understood that many other means than that shown may be used to clamp the two halves of the spindle 12 upon the inner end of the strip without departing from my invention. It will also be readily understood that while I have shown my device particularly designed for a ticket-holder the construction described is equally applicable for dispensing rolled material of any kind.

I claim as my invention 1. A roll-holder, consisting of a tubular body, a longitudinally-split spindle having its split end tapered and provided with a pe- IOO ripheral groove, and an annular lange carried bythe body in position to receive the said tapered end and enter into the groove whereby the spindle may be normally held in the bodyand the two portions thereof drawn together.

2. A roll-holder, consisting of a tubular body provided with a head at one end and having a peripheral axial slit, a longitudinallysplit spindle, a second head secured to said spindle, said head being adapted to close the open end of the body and to rotate therein with the spindle, means for detachably holding the spindle and head rotatably in the body, and means carried by the first head for holding the two portions of the spindle together, the arrangement being such that thev second head with its spindle may be-withdrawn from the tubular body.

3. A roll-holder, consisting of a tubular body closed at one end, a spindle, means carl ried by the spindle for receiving the end of a roll, a second head secured to the spindle, said head being adapted to close the open end of the body and to rotate therein with the spindle, and means for detachably holding said second head and spindle rotatably in the body.

4. A roll-holder, consisting of a tubular body closed at one end and having a longitudinal slit extending to the open end, a spindle, a second head secured to said spindle, the said head being adapted to close the open end of thebody and to rotate therein with the spindle, means carried by the spindle for receiving the end of the roll, and means for detachably holding said head and spindle in the body so as to permit a rotation thereof.
