Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. TIBBITS, OF PALMYRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED HARNESS-SNAP.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,506. dated August 11, 1863.
To all whom it' may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES B. TIBBI'rs, of Palmyra, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Harness Snap; andi do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention, taken in the line x a', Fig. 2; Fig.` 2, a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two iigures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a snap for the breast-straps, and other parts of harness where applicable, which will operate without the aid of a spring, which is liable to get out or" order.
To this end the invention consists in forming the snap with a tongue, which is attached to the snap by a pivot, and having said tongue provided with an eye, through which the strap passes, the strap also passing through an eye on the main portion of the snap, the several parts being so arranged that the pull or weight of the strap will keep the tongue closed, or in proper relation with main portion of the snap, so that the latter cannot become casually detached from the part to which it is connected.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body or main portion of the snap, which is of hook form, as shown in Fig. l, and is provided at its end opposite to the hook with a rectangular eye, a, through which the breast or other strap, B, passes. The shank b of the`body or main portion of the snap-that is to say, the -portion between the hook a', and the eye a-has two projections,
c c,which project from it at right angles.
C represents the tongue of the snap, which is fitted and works on a pivot or pin d, which passes through the projections c c `on the shank b. The outer end of the tongue C is beveled, as shown at e, and the end of the hook a is also beveled, as shown at e', (see Fig. 1,) so that the end ofthe tongue may bear against the end of the hook, and not be forced out beyond it. This will be fully un derstood by referring to Fig. 1. The inner end of the tongue C is provided with a rectangular, eye f, through which the strap B also passes. This eye f is so constructed or arranged that it will fit snugly against the eye a, and perfectly coincide therewith, so that the two eyes a l)"will be as one eye, and when said eyes are in contact the -end of the tongue C bein close contact with the end of the hook a'.
From the above description itwill be seen that the pull of the strap B will keep the end of the tongue G in contact with the end of the hook a. A very slight pull will effect this, even a slight weight on the strap. Thus the use of springs is entrelydispensed with, and there are no parts liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use. The snap, it will be seen, may be readily connected with the part to which it is to be attached by pressing inward the tongue C, as shown in red in Fig. l.'
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment or use, in combination with the main portion or body A of a harness-snap, provided with a hook, a', and an eye, a, of a tongue, C, pivoted to the part A, and provided with an eye, f, all arranged as herein described.
JAMES B. TIBBITS.
