A. L. BRITTON.
I EAR MUFF. v No. 389,735. Pa tente d Sept. 18, 1888.
WITNESSES: lNVENTOR:
RNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW L. BRITTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EAR-MUFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 389,735, dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed December 29, 1887. Serial No. 259,320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW L. BRITTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ear-Muffs, which improve ment is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in ear-muffs; and it consists of the combination of parts, as herein set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an ear-muff embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a similar section of a portion on an enlarged scale, the parts being separated. Fig.4 represents a view of the frame of the muff.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an ear-muff, formed of the outside piece or main cover, 1, lining 2, and frame 3, said cover and lining being suitable fabric. The frame 3, preferably of wire, isD-shaped. Consequently the muff is of similar shape, the vertical piece 4 being in front and the bow 5 around the pe-' riphery of the cover 1, the frame, as is evident, keeping the muff sufiiciently taut, especially at the front, whereby bagging of said front is prevented, said front also being flat,
-- whereby it lies closely to the face of the wearer,
avoiding the bulging and clumsy appearance of muffs heretofore made, this latter feature being more particularly occasioned by the removal of the overhanging wall of the cover along the line of the piece 4. Between the cover and lining are one or more layers of paper, 6,which add warmth to the muff without materially increasing the weight thereof. I am aware that it is not new to form the frame of an ear-muff of a single piece of wire curved at one portion thereof, so as to form a bow, and such I do not claim; but I am not aware that it is old to form such frame of two separate pieces, the one straight and the other curved, as herein described, whereby any movement of the outer portions of the muff while, on the ear does not cause the movement of the straight or face piece of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
