Ao. R. HARRIS,
LAMP BURNER.
NO. 379,110. Patented Mar. 6, 1888.
TAE/1755555- LJ,Em/D:
UNITED STATES 1 3ATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES R. HARRIS, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,110, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed April 25, 1887. Serial No. 236.042. (No model.)
ers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled through the burner, showing the deflector in a in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this spccification. y
My invention relates to an inprovenent in lamp-burners; and it consists in operating the cover of the filling-tube by means of the deflector, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to have the cover for the upper end of the tube operated by the deflector of the burner, so that when the cap is raised' upward out of the way the rnouth of the filling-tube is opened at thesame time.
Figure l is a plan view of a lamp-burner to which my invention is applied, the top portion of the deflector of the burner being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken raised position.
A represents a lamp-burner of any suitable construction, Which is provided with afilliugtube, B, through which the oil can be poured directly from the ean or other vessel into the lamp-bowl, and thus save the necessity of having to remove the burner fron the lampbowl each time the bowl is to be filled with oil. The upper end of this tube B rises about flush with the top per-forated surface, C, of the burner, and is provided with ears or pro- 40 jections D upon opposite sides, which serve as bearings for the cover E, which closes the month of the filling-tube ,while the burner is in use.
The cover E is provided with suitable bearings or pivots, which pass through the projections D, and projecting from one side of the cover is a suitable arm or extension, G, which is turned upward at its outer end, and to Which upwardly-turned arm or projection G is fastened the connecting-rod I. This connecting-rod I has its other ,end loosely fastened to the deflector H, hinged to the base of the burner at d, so that when the deflector is raised upward, as shown, the connecting rod will exert a pull upon the upwardly-turned end of the arm or projection, and thus cause the cover E of the filling device to rise or fall with the deflector. When the deflector is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, the cover to the filling-tube is raised at the same time, so that oil can be freely poured through it into the bowl of the lamp, and when the deflector is closed downward into its normal position the cover E is closed at the same time. By connecting the two parts together all necessity of ha-ving to operate each one separately is entirely done away with, and thus the filling of the lamp is greatly facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- The combination of the burner A, provided with a filling-tube, B, the cover E, pivotally connected to the upper end of said tube, and provided with an arm or projection which is turned upward at its outer end, a hinged deflector, and the rod I, the coverE and t-hedefiectorbeing connected together by the rod, so that the cover is raised and lowered with the deflector, substantially as set forth.
In testimony Whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OHARLES R. HARRIS.
