GEORGE D. NICHOLS, OF NEWV CANAAN, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET-COVER AND BUSTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 359,807, dated March 22, 1887.
Application filed Dceemherii, 1866. Serial 110.220.5551. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. NrenoLs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Canaan, in the county of-Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Corset-Cover and Bustle, of which the following is a specification.
The essential objectof my invention is to w combine a bustle with thejacketlike garment usually worn by ladies over the corset, and known as a corset-cover, thereby affording a support by means of the corset-cover, and from the shoulders of the wearer not only to the bustle, but also to the articles of clothing resting thereon, the whole constituting a new article of manufacture. This object I have accomplished by the novel means hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a combined corset-cover and bustle made according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a back view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a front view thereof, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A dtsignates the body of the corset-cover, which is of the usual jacketlike shape, so as to rest upon the shoulders when worn, it being open in front and provided with buttons and button-holes, or other suitable fastenings at that point.
B designates the bustle combined with the corset-cover. The position of this bustle is on the lower rear portion of the corset-cover below the waist-line, so that when in use the bustle takes a position opposite the hips of the wearer like an ordinary bustle, and it will be readily understood that by this construction the bustle, as well as the clothing that may rest thereon,is firmly supported by the corsetcover from the shoulders of the wearer, while a very useful article of dress is thereby obtained.
The construction of the bustle B may be varied according to the taste or fancy of the wearer, and in the example shown it comprises a series of stiffening-ribs, G, of whalebone or other suitable material, which are fitted in pockets D of a skirt, E, the upper and side ed ges of which are fastened to the corsetcover at the proper points by stitching or other suitable means. In order to permit the skirt- E, forming the body of the bustle, to be washed together with the corset-cover, the ribs 0 should be removable from the pockets D, and in the example shown this purpose is effected by dividing the shirt in a vertical central li tie into two parts or sections, from which the ribs may be drawn in an inward direction through the opening F left between the sections. When the skirt E is made as last de scribed, it is provided with cords G- or the like for closing the opening F.
In order to permit of firmly holding the bustle B to the waist, the corset-cover is provided with waistbands I on the inner portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, said bands being adapted to go around the waist and be fastened on the front of the wearer.
It should be understood that what I. have termed a corset-cover may be any jacketlike garment, whether worn to cover the con set or otherwise.
I am aware that a garment-supporter has heretofore been made with an enlarged lower portion extending entirely around the article, and I do not claim such as my invention, the important feature of which is to arrange abustle in the lower rear portion of the cover for a corset, leaving the front portion of said cover in its natural state unaffected by the bustle.
What I claim as new, and desire to seeur by Letters Patent, is I A corset-cover, A, having waistbands I on the interior thereof, in combination with a bustle, B, formed in two sections on the lower rear portion of said cover, and provided with cords G, substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE D. NICHOLS.
