CAR-COUPLING.
'dPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,218, dated November 24, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE CALVERT THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Darien, in the county of McIntosh and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a description.
This invention is an improvement in carcouplings; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of one end of a car provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section drawn through the draw-bar. Fig. 3is a cross-sectionof ,Ithefdraw-head, and Fig. 4 is akdetail perspective view of the coupling- The draw-head A may be attached to the car in the usual manner. It is formed with a flaring mouth, A, the mortise A and the slot A theilatter'being'cut through the top wall, as shown. The under side of the forward end of the top wall is formed with the curvedfportion a and :the stop portion a, inclining forward and downwardly from thesaid curved portion.
In the upper faceof the lower side of the draw-head I form a socket or depression, a, in which rests the point of the coupling-hook B. This"'couplinghook B is pivoted on a pin, 0, below the curve a and stop a, and concentrically with the arc in which said curve a is described. The upper forward end of the hook is formed with a curve, I), anda straight stop portion, 1), carried forward from the said curved part 6. These parts b and b can be formed with or fit closely against the parts a aof the draw-head, asimost clearly shown in Fig. 2. The front end, I)", of the coupling-hook is beveled or inclined rearwardly from its upper to its under side, andioperates to guide an approaching link downward toward the point of said hook, so it may readily pass thereunderlinto'engagement,withQthe securing-shoulder b. Immediately in rear of this shoulder b the under side of the hook or its shank is formed with a recess, b, and at its rear end such hook has a depending portion, b terminating in the straight beveled end G of shank, which bevel receives the weight of the hook, relieving the point thereof of all strain.

A spring, D, is secured at its forward end to the draw-head, and, bearing against the rear end of the coupling-hook, operates to hold such hook in the position shown in Fig. 2. On the end of the car, above and on opposite sides of the line of the draw-head, I secure guides E E, preferably anti-friction rollers, as shown. A chain or cord, F, connects with the coupling-hook at f, and extends thence upward between the guides E, where it connects with connections or branch cords F and F F The connection F extends upward, and is held by a keeper, f, in positionlto be reached from theEtop of the car, and the connectionsiF extend laterally over guides f to the side of the car. By pulling on these cords the rear end of the coupling-hook may be elevated and, thejlinklreleasedlbyfaf person on .;either sidebr the top of the car.
My invention, it will beseen, is simple, and provides a construction which will not easily get out of order.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1.
