Dec. 3, 1957 H. L. WENGER PORTABLE FILTER FOR CIGARETTES, CIGARS, SMOKING PIPES AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 22, 1954 IN VEN TOR. ATE rm 4492/22" Jain 4Z5 United States Patent PORTABLE FILTER FOR CIGARETTES, CIGARS, SMOKING PIPES AND THE LIKE Hermann Leslie Wenger, New York, N. Y. Application December 22, 1954, Serial N 0. 476,979
1 Claim. (Cl. 131-173) This invention relates to tobacco filters and more particularly to filters used for removing undesirable substances from tobacco smoke.
It is an object of this invention to provide a tobacco smoke filter which is sanitary and conducive to the good health of the user because of its power to remove undesirable substances from the said tobacco smoke.
Another object of the present invention is to provide such a filter which is compact, portable, attractive and easily cleaned.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tobacco smoke filter which adds to the enjoyment of the user by cooling the tobacco smoke being inhaled.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a tobacco smoke filter which can be used with cigarettes, cigars, pipes and the like.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tobacco smoke filter which can be easily manufactured and which can be marketed at a comparatively low price.
Other and more specific objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description as read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the novel features of this invention being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows located at the ends of the said line.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of this form of the invention showing the use of a pipe therewith.
The present invention achieves its objects by means of an attractive container which is adapted to hold Without leakage a quantity of cooling fluid, such as water, said fluid being in the vicinity of metallic tubes filled with tobacco smoke which is eventually inhaled by the user. The action of the cooling fluid is such that injurious substances contained in the tobacco smoke are condensed and deposited within the said fluid thus allowing the user to enjoy the pleasures of smoking without subjecting himself to health hazards. Moreover the smoke is cooled by the said fluid thereby increasing the users enjoyment of tobacco smoking.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the embodiment of the invention therein shown comprises a leak proof metallic container having an elliptical cross-section and a manually engageable, threa-dedly secured cover 11 in the upper portion of the said container 10. On the upper side portion 12 of the said container 10 there is located an aperture 13 communicating with an external flared tube 14 integral with the said container 10 and of a size sufiicient to receive and retain one end of a cigarette 15, cigar or pipe 16. The said aperture 13 also communicates with a tube 17 located within the container 10 and running to the vicinity of the base 18 of the container 10 and thereupon connecting with a further portion of the said tube 17 having the conformation of an inverted U, the
ice
bottom end 19 of the tube 17 being open and communicating with the interior of the container 10.
On the side portion 20 opposite that of the said aperture 13 there is located a second aperture 21 communicating in this instance with a substantially firm tube 22 integral with the said container 10 and having a conformation similar to that of a cigarette holder or a pipe holder. The second aperture 21 also communicates with a tube 23 located within the interior of the container 10 and integral with a further portion of the said tube having a U-shaped conformation and terminating in an open end 24 located in the vicinity of the top portion 25 of the said container 10, the said open end 24 communicating with the interior of the container 10.
In using this device, it is first necessary to remove the cover 11 and fill the container 10 to about its midportion with a cooling fluid 26 such as water-or mineral oil, as shown in Figure 2. Then a cigarette 15, cigar or pipe 16 is inserted within the flared tube 14 so as to be securely held therein. The user may then place the tube 22 within his mouth, as indicated in Figure 2., and commence smoking in the usual manner. Undesirable substances within the tobacco smoke will be condensed within the tube 17 and deposited within the fluid 26. The said fluid 26 will become discolored and may be removed, as desired, by simply unscrewing the cover 11 and pouring out the contents of the container 10, which may then be refilled with a clean quantity of cooling fluid. The tobacco smoke Which remains during smoking will occupy the upper portion of the said container 10 and may be inhaled through the U-shaped tube 23 and the substantially firm tube 22. Such smoke will be cooled within this tube 23 as well as within the first tube 17.
The container 10 may be easily carried about by the user and may be attractively finished in a variety of colors. Moreover, the cooling fluid 26 will not leak out of the container 10 no matter what its position, such leakage being substantially prevented by the bends in the tubes 17 and 23 as well as the leakproof construction of the container 10. The device is also easily cleaned since it may be flushed out with a clean current of suitable fluid when desired.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated and described hereinabove has been selected for the purpose of clearly setting forth the principles involved. It will be apparent, however, that the present invention is susceptible of being modified in respect to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which may be resorted to without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
A portable tobacco smoke filter comprising, in combination, a container having openings in the tops of opposite side walls for securely engaging an inlet and an outlet member, said inlet member comprising a tubular holder for a tobacco smoking device, said outlet member comprising a tubular mouthpiece, a U-shaped tube disposed within said container having one end in communication with said mouthpiece and the other end communicating with the interior of said container, an S-shaped tube disposed within said container having one end in communication with said holder and the other end communicating with the interior of said container, the said other end of said U-shaped tube being disposed adjacent to the top of said container and the said other end of said S-shaped tube being disposed adjacent to the bottom of said container, both said U-shaped and said S-shaped tubes being of high heat conductivity, an opening in the top of said container having a removable closure, and a References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS D. 169,699 Rotthier May 26, 1953 Rowe Dec. 27, 1864 LaI'Ssen Sept. 4, 1869 Probyn Ian. 9, 1906 Jackson Oct. 5, 1954 FOREIGN PATENTS France Feb. 24, 1936
