METRONOME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,448, dated January 30, 1883, Application filed November 25, 1882. (X0 model.)
To all whom 2t may concern Be it known that we, EDMUND B. GREENE and Status J. EMERSON, J12, both of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and I mproved Metronome, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our improvements relate to nietronomes, or instruments for heating time, the object being to simulate by a heater or baton the ordinary movements given by hand, so as to indicate directly the length of each note in a bar of music.
The invention consists in a shaft carrying a heater or baton and fitted for operation by a cylinder that is rotated by spring-power; and it further consists in an escapement of novel construction for regulating the rotation of the cylinder, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved instrument,partly sectional. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same with a portion of the escapement-balance broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail section, showing the cylinder and shaft. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the foot-piece that is operated upon by the cylinder.
The frame A, carrying the mechanism, may be of any suitable form or construction, and in use will be contained within a suitable box, so that only the parts for winding the spring and setting the mechanism will be accessible.
On the winding-shaft a is a spring, I), and on the same shaft is a gear-wheel, c, engaging a pinion on a second shaft, d, that carries the operating-cylinder B.
Above the cylinder B are slide-rods e c and a screw,' f, upon which is a slide-nut, 9, that is fitted with a hollow post, It. On the end of the screwfis a knob,f, for turning the screw, and thus moving the nut and the post back and forth over the surface of the cylinder 13. In the post his a shaft or rod, 2', to the lower end of which is fixed a foot-piece, k, resting on the cylinder 13, and at the upper end of the rod is pivoted an arm, baton, or lever, l. The arm 1 is formed next to the rod t' with a circular disk, Z, that engages a fixed support, m, that forms a hearing, so that the disk constitutes a fulcrum on which the lever Z moves. Upon one sideof the post It is a spring, a, taking against a pin, it, on the rod 2', and acting to press the pin against a fixed stop, 0. The cylinder B is provided with pins or projections 12 upon its surface, which are of two different lengths, the shorter being for raising the rod or shaft i when they pass beneath the foot-piece 7t, and the longer for giving a quarter-rotation (more or less) to the shaft by acting againstthe beveled side of the foot-piece it. These pins are arranged in rows around the cylinder and in proper location for giving the required movements to the shaft, and they are also so arranged that by the adjustment of the slide g lengthwise-of the cylinder the different variations of the movement may be obtained as required. For instance, in one position the lever will be given a simple up and down movement,
in another position a side movement will be given between the up and down movement, and in the third position a double heat will be given between the up and down movements, and so on, as may be required.
The escapement mechanism is as follows: q is an escapement-wheel on the cylinder-shaft d. ris the pallet on a short arbor, s, above the escapement-wheel. s is an arm on the arbor s, forked at its end. if is a gear-wheel on a secondary arbor, t, and a is a pin on the wheel t, engaged by the forks of the arm 8. a is a disk on the arbor it, provided with a crankpin, from which a rod,"v, extends to and is connected to the outer end of a spring-arm, a, that is fixed at one side of the frame A. a is an arbor carrying a balance-wheel, b, and also a pinion, c, that is engaged by the gearwheel t.
In the operation of these parts, the power of the spring being exerted to rotate the cylinder B, movement is given to the escapementwheel q and pallet r, and the arm s 011 the pallet-arbor is thus given a reciprocating movement, which oscillates the gear-wheel t. The spring-arm w is drawn' upward at each oscillation of the gear-wheel, and acts to return the wheel to its middle position. The momentum of the throw, aided by the balance-wheel I), carries the pin it away from the fork of the arm 3; but the arm is prevented from swinging backward by projections c on the arm, which take upon the edge of the disk a. It will thus be seen that the momentum of the parts at each throw becomes the means for regulating the escapement of the cylinder B, the cylinder remaining at rest until the momentum is overcome, and the pin a returns into engagement with the arm 5. This momentum will be determined by the strength of the spring 20 and the weight of the balancewheel I), and in. order to regulate the momentum 1 provide a spring, (1, that is adjustable by a screw, 0, fitted to the support of the spring-arm to, so that by the movement of the spring d in and out the power of the springarm will be increased or diminished, and the gear-wheel t thus arrested more or less quickly. The lever or baton I can thus be made to move more or less rapidly. At g is a spring-bolt fitted for engagement with one head of the cylinder B at a certain point in its rotation, so as to stop the movement of the cylinder at the proper place for adjustment of the nut g.
The cylinder may be made in sections or as a single piece, and may be grooved instead of being provided with pins, as shown. Any suitable pius or projections may be used.
Having thus fully described our invention,
' we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In metronomes, the combination, with the rotating cylinder B, provided with projectionsp, of the rod or shaft '1', foot-piece 7c, and
pivoted lever or baton l, substantially as described, for operation as set forth.
2. In metronomes, the combination of the lever or baton l, provided with the disk I, the fulcrum-piece on, operating-shaft i, post It, and spring a, substantially as described, for operation as set forth.
3. The combination of the adjustable screw f, slide or nut 9, post h, lever l, and shafti with the frame A and rotating cylinder B, substantially as described, for operation as set forth.
4. In metronomes, the combination of the cylinder B, escapement-wheel d, pallet 1', arm 8, and gear-wheel if, provided with a pin, a, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of the spring-arm w. connection a, dish a, gear-wheel t, and vibrating escapement-arm s, forked at its end. and provided with projections 0 substantially as shown and described.
6. In metronomes, the combination of the adjustable spring at with the spring-arm w and connections to the escapement mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
7. The escapement mechanism consisting of the balance-wheel b, the spring-arm w, the gearing t 0', disk u, and vibrating arm 8, substantially as described, for operation as set forth.
