Claims. (Cl. 131--175) This invention relates to a device for smoking cigarettes.
Some of the objects and advantages of the present invention are as follows. It affords the smoker the full benefit of a cigarette when lighted by trapping and thus saving the smoke ordinarily carried or which drifts off in the air. It keeps the smoke out of the smokers eyes. It eliminates nicotine stained fingers. The smoker is shielded from sparks apt to bum holes in articles of ap parel, and other damage by re from a burning cigarette virtually is impossible. Ashes are prevented from dropping at random as a cigarette is being smoked, the ashes and the cigarette butt being held for careful disposal regarding cleanliness. The smoker may draw into the mouth not only smoke through the tobacco of the cigarette but the trapped smoke free from tar and resin.
With the foregoing, other objects and advantages of the invention will appear when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a device em bodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a side View of the tube detached, portions of the tube being broken away.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the tube.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the mouth piece and parts carried thereby showing how a cigarette butt may be ejected from the holder member.
F ig. 6 is a perspective View of the holder member per se.
Fig. 7 is a side view of the hollow cap Screw which serves as an ejector and limiting means in cooperation with the holder member shown in Fig. 6.
Generally stated, the device comprises two main elements lil and 11 which may be detachably connected in cooperative relation.
The element comprises :a mouth piece 12 and a holder member 13. The mouth piece may be made of any suitable material such as incombustible and heat resistant plastic, or aluminum. The mouth piece is tapped to provide a relatively large threaded bore 14 and a small threaded bore 15 in coaxial communication with each other. The bore 14 is outermost and opens through the receiving end of the mouth piece. The bore 14 has left threads and the bore 15 has right threads. A plain duct 16 is formed in the mouth piece 12. One end of the duct 16 communicates with the bore 15 and its other end opens through the bit 17 of the mouth piece. A cap screw 18 is adapted for threaded engagement in the bore 15. The screw has a duct 19 extending therethrough. When the screw 18 is in place the ducts 16 and 19 form a continuous draft passage in the mouth piece. The holder member 13 consists of a hollow externally threaded body whose outer eiitrauce end is knurled, as at 20, and flared, as at 21, to facilitate insertion of a cigarette, and whose inner end has an inturned flange 22. The holder member 13 also has a plurality of radial slots or openings 23, spaced from its cigarette receiving end, and which communicate with the hollow of the holder member. The holder member is adapted for threaded engagement in the bore 14, and accommodates the screw 18 whose head engages the flange 22 when the screw is in place in the bore 15, it being understood that when the holder member 13 is screwed into the mouth piece 12 suficiently f 2 to close the slots 23 the screw is put in place after the holder member 13 has been screwed into the bore 14. This establishes communication of the hollow of the holder member 13 with the aforesaid draft passage of the mouth piece. A cigarette 24 inserted into the holder member 13 is held by the latter in smolcable relation to the mouth piece as shown in Fig. l.
The element 11 comprises :an outer tubular member 25, an intermediate tubular member 26 and an inner tubular member 27 constituting a single unit or tube or envelope. The tubular member 25 is preferably made of aluminum, and has a rounded tip end wall with air inlet holes 28 therein. The butt end of the tubular member 25 has a once around female thread 29 which engages a complemental male thread 30 formed on the mouth piece 12. The tubular member 25 may be detachably connected with the mouth piece in a quick and easy manner. The tubular member 26 is made of cement bonded asbestos or the like to reduce the heat of a burning cigarette. The tubular member 27 is made of thin metal which may be aluminum whose inside is polished so as to enable the user to clean the entire inner cylindrical surface from time `to time. The several tubular members are readily separable from each other. The tubular members 26 and 27 are somewhat shorter than the tubular member 25 so that the thread 29 may be easily engaged with the thread 311. The single unit or tube composed of the members 25, 26 and 27 is adapted to contain a cigarette extending lengthwise therein.
When the parts are assembled as indicated above, the slots 23 establish communication between the interior of the element 11 and the hollow of the holder member 13 so that smoke which has been trapped in the element or tube 11 may be drawn into the mouth of the smoker through the aforesaid draft passage formed by the ducts 16 and 19. It is also obvious `that when the holder member 13 is screwed into the mouth piece 12 suciently to close the slots 23 smoke from the lighted cigarette may be drawn directly through the tobacco of the cigarette in the usual manner into the mouth of the smoker. The trapped smoke arises from the burning cigarette between puffs and will be free from tar and nicotine. By closing the holes with the thumb, the lighted cigarette may be easily extinguished. By detaching the tube 11 from the mouth piece, the ashes may be readily dumped into a suitable receptacle, and the cigarette butt may be ejected from the holder member 13 into said receptacle for proper disposal with the ashes. To eject the cigarette butt after the tube 11 has been detached, it is only necessary to tum the holder member 13 so that it moves axially inward of the bore 14 relative to the screw 18, whereupon the screw will eject the butt as illustrated in Fig. 5. The tubular member 27 may be slipped out of the tubular member 26 after which the interior surface thereof may be easily and thoroughly cleaned.
It is obvious that by slight modifications the device of present invention may be adapted for smoking cigars; and it is to be further understood that the invention is not restricted to the details above described, but includes all constructions and modifications coming within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
