AfTOR/VEX United States Patent CONCRETE SAWING MACHINE William Hurst Lewis, Pasadena, Calif., assignor to Hurst Lewis Enterprises, Pasadena, Calif., a corporation of California Application June 30, 1951, Serial No. 234,579 3 Claims. (Cl. 51-170) Another object of the invention is to provide novel improvements in the construction of a saw for cutting ctlncrete slabs such as roads, sidewalks, floors and the 1i e.
A further object of the invention is to provide a manually propelled concretecutting saw machine wherein the direction of movement can be readily reversed.
Another object of the invention is to provide an im proved concrete cutting saw machine'wherein reverse cuts may be readilv made either by pulling or pushing the machine with the cutting blade either leading or trailing.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a concrete sawing machine embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a partial elevation view showing a guard construction for the saw blade shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure l, showing a modified form of the invention.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken along the line 7-7 of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a side elevation view of a modiied guard construction for the saw blade.
Figure 9 is a top view partly broken away of the same.
Figure 10 is a detailed fragmentary view of the handle frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a chassis having wheeled axles 11 and 12 provided with wheels 13 and 14, axle 12 being shown as having a pivot mounting 15 of any desired type for steering. A motor 16 is suitably mounted on chassis 10 and has a drive shaft 17 which extends transversely to the chassis 10 and parallel to axle 11.
A frame 18 is pivotally mounted at one end of motor shaft 17 and comprises a pair of extension links 19 having a tie rod 20 and mounting a rotary saw shaft 21 at the other end. Links 19 have turnbuckles 22 for increasing or decreasing the length of frame 18. Motor shaft 17 mounts a pulley 23 and shaft 21 mounts a pulley 24 which is driven by a belt 25 from pulley 23. Shaft 21 mounts a rotary concrete cutting saw blade abrasive wheel 26.
A pair of tubular socket elements 27 are suitably secured on the top of motor 16 and extend generally rearwardly as shown in Figure l and a similar pair of socket elements 28 are similarly mounted and extend forwardly. A handle 29 is mounted on a handle frame 30 which comprises a pair of tube or rod elements, the forward ends of which are adapted to be positioned in socket elements 27 or 28 and a tie rod 31 interconnects socket elements 27. A link 32 is connected between tie rods 20 and 31 and comprises a socket member 33 into which extends the end portion of a bar or plunger 34 which carries a collar 35, and a spring 36 is positioned on bar 34 and seats against collar 35 and the end of member 33. Tie rods 20 and 31 are arranged Patented Jan. 25, 1955 to be removable so that frame 18 may be swung to the dotted line position of Figure l and link 32 connected to socket elements 28.
, A V-shaped rod 37 is secured near the central portion thereof to one of links 19 adjacent shaft 21 and has end portions 38 and 39 as shown. A sector shaped guard element 40 has a pair of tubular brackets 41 by which the guard may be supported on the upwardly extending end portion 38 of rod 37 as shown in Figures 3 and 4. A pair of hinge type elements 42 are secured on the opposite sides of guard 40 and a similar pair of hinge type elements A43 are secured on either side of a complementary guard 44 and held together by a retractable U -shaped pin element 45. Guard 40 provides a bracket 46 for securing the L-shaped end 47 of a water coolingv spray pipe which is supplied with cooling water from any suitable source, end 47 having a spray slot 48 yfor directing a sheet of water against cutting blade 26'.
The operation of the invention as thus far described should be clear from the foregoing description of the construction. Upon operation of the motor 16 cutting wheel 26 will be rotated on shaft 21 and a pavement or roadway or other slab can be given a saw cut and chassis 10 can be moved along the slab by either a pushing or pulling action, the vehicle being propelled from handle 29. Since certain types of cuts are preferably made by pulling action and other types of cuts are preferred by a pushing action and since the rotation of shafts 17 and 21 .is the same, a change from a pushing to a pulling propulsion of the vehicle can be readily made by removing handle frame 30 from socket elements 27 and swinging frame 18 from the full line position shown in Figure 1 over motor 16 to the dotted line position and replacing frame 30 in socket elements 28.
It will be observed that saw blade guard 40 will be reversed during this reversal by removing it from end 38 and positioning it on end 39 of rod 37 using the alternate bracket 41. In the dotted line position of Figure l of the frame, end 39 will be substantially vertical.
Figures 5 and 6 show a modied form of the invention. These figures show a wheeled frame 50, a motor 51, a saw frame 52 and a shaft 53 having a saw blade 54, all substantially the same as in Figures 1 and 2. A post 55 extends upwardly from motor 51 and a saddle element 56 is rotatably mounted on post 55 and may be locked in position by set screw 57.
A pair of handle socket elements 58 extend in one direction from saddle element 56 and a similar pair of handle socket elements 59 extend in the opposite direction. Socket. elements 58 and 59 are formed with threaded cross bores 60 to receive a pair of threaded bearing pins 61. Pins 61 provide a swivel bearing for a collar 62 through which extends a crank rod 63 which is suitably supported from the collar as by a pair of stop collars 64. A tubular link member 65 has a threaded connection at one end to rod 63 and is connected at its other end by a retractable pin 66 to a bearing bracket 67 on the rod 68 connected between link members 69 of frame 52. One of frame 52 link members 70 has a retractable stop pin 71 and a circular plate 72 secured to the frame of motor 51 is provided with a plurality of holes 73 which may be engaged by pin 71. A handle frame is provided for selective positioning in either pair of socket elements 58 or 59. A movable handle frame 74 is slidable on frame 90 and has a handle 75 and a crossbar 76 connected by an adjustable spring 77 to a crossbar 78 on frame 90. A suitable stop for bar 76 may be provided on frame 74. Frame 90 carries a marker 79 which becomes visible when the handle frame 74 is pushed inwardly an excessive amount.
The operation of the invention as shown in Figures 5 and 6 should be clear. Saw frame 52 can be adjustably positioned for depth of cut by turning handle rod 63, or the saw frame may be swung to any angular position without the use of the handle rod link connection by positioning lock pin 71 in a selected one of the holes 73 in plate 72. By this method the saw frame may be swung to a position such as indicated at A and a saw cut can be made in a roof or ceiling structure overhead. The saw frame can be swung to the dotted line position indicated at B for reversing the direction of propulsion of the chassis by rotation around bearing post S5.
Figures 8 and 9 show a modiiied form of blade guard construction. In these figures guard element 80 is provided with tubular brackets 81 for mounting on pin 82 secured to the saw frame and a removable guard element 83 is secured to guard element 80. Guard element 80 has a pair of U-shaped ange edges 84 and element 83 has a complementary pair of ilanges 85 which interiit and engage anges 84 whereby guard 83 may be removed from guard 80 by a simple sliding action.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred forms of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. For instance, the position of saw blade 24 on shaft 21 is selective and may be positioned anywhere on the shaft 21 and an additional blade may be positioned on the shaft either at the other end or at an intermediate position if desired.
I claim:
1. A machine of the character described comprising in combination a wheeled chassis, a motor on said chassis having a shaft, a frame having at one end a pivot axis coinciding with said shaft, a rotary saw shaft carried by said frame at the other end and having a saw blade and means for positioning said frame with said blade at either end of said chassis, said means including a saddle having a handle socket structure rotatably mounted on said motor and an adjustable length link connected between said frame and said socket structure and a handle for varying the length of said link.
