  • This invention is concerned primarily with the actuation and control of the tools carried by the turret and the indexing of the turret.
  • the indexing of the turret is produced by retation of the cam shaft 5 through a Geneva wheel 30 having five Geneva slots 3! corresponding to the five faces of the turret, this Geneva wheel being turned intermittently by the action of the Geneva arm 32 keyed to a jack shaft 33 positioned beneath the cam shaft 5 and journaled in the end walls of the column 3.

  • the shaft 33 is driven at intervals by power, this being accomplished through a worm wheel 40 secured thereto and with which cooperates a worm 4! on a horizontal shaft 42.
  • This horizontal shaft 42 may be ro tated by power through a clutch at 43, which when closed, couples to the shaft 42 a sprocket wheel 44 about which passes a drive chain 55 passing about a drive sprocket wheel 46 fixed to the shaft 41 of a motor 48 (see Figure 6).
  • the shaft 42 at its other end is connected through a similar clutch 50 to a normally sta tionary drum

  • the stop 55 is carried by this worm wheel 53 which normally engages one side of the worm 52, thus locking the worm wheel against motion in normal driving direction so that the clutch 50 acts as a brake to stop the rotation of the shaft 42 when the clutch 50 is closed. It does not, however, prevent reverse rotation applied to the outer end of the polygonal extension of the drum 5! to which the normally disconnected hand wheel 56 may be applied, reverse rotation of this drum retracting the stop 55.

Details of mechanism for so driving the cam shaft may be as shown in my United States Letters Patent No. 2,506,515 granted May 2, 1950, for Automatic Lathe or Screw Machine. Means for feeding a work piece through the spindle 5, including a feed cam 23 carried by the shaft 5, and other cams 24, 25, and a series of cams on an elongated cam drum 25 carried by the shaft 5 may also be employed for controlling various operations of the machine in accordance with usual practice.
This invention is concerned primarily with the actuation and control of the tools carried by the turret and the indexing of the turret.
The indexing of the turret is produced by retation of the cam shaft 5 through a Geneva wheel 30 having five Geneva slots 3! corresponding to the five faces of the turret, this Geneva wheel being turned intermittently by the action of the Geneva arm 32 keyed to a jack shaft 33 positioned beneath the cam shaft 5 and journaled in the end walls of the column 3. The Geneva wheel 3i is secured to a quill 34- journaled on the shaft l and having at one end a bearing flange 35 (see Figure 3) journaled in the inner wall 36 of the column 3. The opposite end of the quill 315 has a bearing flange member 31' journaled in the outer wall 38 of the column 3. The inner bearing flange 35 is secured to the outer end of the turret II as by screws 39. The shaft 33 is driven at intervals by power, this being accomplished through a worm wheel 40 secured thereto and with which cooperates a worm 4! on a horizontal shaft 42. This horizontal shaft 42 may be ro tated by power through a clutch at 43, which when closed, couples to the shaft 42 a sprocket wheel 44 about which passes a drive chain 55 passing about a drive sprocket wheel 46 fixed to the shaft 41 of a motor 48 (see Figure 6).
The shaft 42 at its other end is connected through a similar clutch 50 to a normally sta tionary drum The drum 5| has a worm 52 with which meshes a worm wheel 53 on a shaft 54. The stop 55 is carried by this worm wheel 53 which normally engages one side of the worm 52, thus locking the worm wheel against motion in normal driving direction so that the clutch 50 acts as a brake to stop the rotation of the shaft 42 when the clutch 50 is closed. It does not, however, prevent reverse rotation applied to the outer end of the polygonal extension of the drum 5! to which the normally disconnected hand wheel 56 may be applied, reverse rotation of this drum retracting the stop 55. Such retraction moves a limit switch-actuated wedge 57 out of a notch in a disk 58 carried by the shaft 54, making it impossible to start the machine by power until the drum 5| has been returned to braking angular position. This arrangement is similar to that shown in my Patent No. 2,506,515 granted May 2, 1950.
The means for actuating the clutches 43 and 50 is, however, quite different in the present application. The two clutches t3 and 5 are shown as connected by a drag bar 6!) which has lugs 59 which engage the lower forked extremities BI and 62 of a pair of bell crank levers 63 and 64. The adjacent ends of these bell crank levers 63 and 64 have follower rolls 65 and 66, respectively, positioned to be engaged by a cam 70 carried by a rock shaft H, there being five of these rock shafts H spaced angularly around the axis, of the shaft I0 and parallel therewith, one
' for each of the indexed positions of the turret,
and each being journaled through the flange 31 and the Geneva wheel 30. The indexing control is thus effected through mechanism specific for each indexed position or station of the turret. Each of these shafts H carries a dog 12, the dogs of the several shafts being offset axially so that each one lies in the plane of a corresponding lobe 73 on a ring 14, which may be clamped in adjusted angular position to the outer face of a hub or drum [5 journaled on the shaft 33 and driven independently of the shaft 53 by chain and sprocket drive from the main cam shaft 5. Each of the rings 14 is formed split, the two split ends being adapted to be brought toward each other to clamp the ring in adjusted position by tightening a bolt 16 extending through one of the end portions and threaded into the other, as shown best in Figure 8.
Each of the five rock shafts H has keyed thereto a hub 58 carrying a dog Bi] and all of these dogs 65 are in the plane of a cam ii! on the indexing arm 32 carried on the jack shaft 33. On the outer end of each rock shaft H is a crank arm 85 provided with a pin 85 connected by a spring 8'! to a pin 83 on a bracket 89 secured to the outer face of the Geneva wheel 30 and in which the outer end of th corresponding rock shaft H is journaled. Each crank arm 85 has a pair of flat sides, either of which may be pulled toward a flat face 90 on the bracket 59 depending upon the angular relation of the crank arm 85, When one of the shafts 'H is turned to the angular position shown in Figure 15 with the crank arm 85 thrown to the left of center, the dogs 12 and 35 and the cam l0 are in the inoperative position shown and they are ineffective upon the indexing mechanism. In the position of the shaft ll shown in Figures 4, 7, 8 and 11 to 14, inclusive, with a crank arm 85 to the right of center, the corresponding shaft H is in operative angular position.
In the position of the parts before an indexing action is to take place, the cam follower 66 is elevated and the follower 55 is depressed in the position shown in Figures 711 and 12 and the cam TI] on the rock shaft H, which is then immediately below the jack shaft 33, extends vertically as shown. A low portion 82 of the cam 5! engages the dog 85, as shown in Figures 7a and 12. The shaft 42 is thus disconnected from the motor drive, the clutch 43 being open and the clutch 5!! closed. As the control shaft 5 continues to rotate, which also rotates the drum l5, this rotation being new in the slow speed angular portion, the lobe 73 which happens to be in the plane of the dog 72 of the shaft H which is in uppermost position, contacts this dog 12 and rocks it to the left, which, in turn, rocks the cam 75 into the left dotted line position shown in Figure lb. The inclined upper end of the cam ll} then presses the cam follower 65 upwardly and allows the follower 66 to drop as in Figure 13, this shifting the drag bar 55 to the right and closing the clutch 43, which starts the rotation of the shaft 52 by the action of the motor 43. The rotation of the jack shaft 33 is thus begun. This causes the indexing arm 32 to start its rotation from the position shown in Figure 13. At the time its follower is in position to enter one of the Geneva slots 3i at Figure 9, the indexing action commences, turning the Geneva wheel and the turret by one-fifth of a rotation. Before the indexing action has commenced, however, the high portion of the cam 81 engages the-dog 85 and holds the rock shaft iaiitraosammsnom in iiearhanataotrea-lims .iniffiaureswm and"7;b,;andvh1:riaure:ii a ainst theaaet onmfztheespring 81zwhichrtends to throw thermal: z-shaft .EI ltrinzt-the --:opposite :directioniha-ck to-thozlilght h ndztciotted line::position zen-Figure and thisrshafta'lI ;;is-stillin-tthis-:angmarzpositionwhen: itzis;movedxoutnfrom:heneath 1711936331). roll gllnre l0) .iby'the indexing motionzof'fthe Geneva: wheel: anditnrretnwhich::carries it: ontrof operative nositiom-andzbrings' the: next; rock shaft II into position. When it is in such position the slide I4I is at its right hand limit of motion up against the stop as shown in Figure 34 and the cam follower I35 is in the right hand portion of the cam groove I3I. This is the position of these parts when indexin is occurring.
After the indexing has been completed and while the jack shaft 33 is still being rotated, the cam I38 is rotated to a position to move the fulcrum I35 to the left into its left hand portion I32 in fast speed. This brings the tool slide I forwardly in fast speed until the tool carried thereby, as will later appear, approaches contact with the work, this being the position in Figures 35, 38, 40 and 42. This brings the slide I4I with the edge cam I44 to the left into contact with one of the followers I45 on the drum I lii. The motion of the jack shaft 53 stops in this angular position of the cam I38. As the contro1 shaft 5 now turns at low speed the operative follower roll I45 then acting upon the edge cam Ii -l, forces the slide I4I to the right and moves the slide I52 further to the left, this efieoting the slow feed of the tool into the work. This takes place until this feed action is at an end when the follower I45 reaches about the high point of the cam edge I44, whereupon the succeeding lobe I3 contacts and rocks the dOg E2 of the shaft II then in operating position, and starts the rotation of the jack shaft 33. As soon as this occurs the cam I36 rotates to move the follower I35 to the right, withdrawing the tool at fast speed and also pulling the slide I4I back against the stop in position for the indexing to occur, whereupon the succeeding tool slide I52 will be brought into cooperative relation to the cam roll Isl} at the lower end of the lever I38.
Means are provided by which the relative extents of fast and slow feed of the tools may be adjusted independently, and as shown, this means comprises the selective positioning of the followers I45 in the drum I46 and also adjustments at the tool slides themselves, as will now be pointed out. The angular position of the cam roll I45 on its drum with which the cam face I44 contacts when this contact is made, determines how much of the length of this cam face will be effective in moving the slide HM and consequently in swinging the lever 83% to produce the feed motion of the tool. For example, if the slide I iI is moved forwardly toward the drum I46 when the follower I45 which will contact the cam face I44 is toward the upper portion of this cam, substantially the entire length of the cam face 44 is effective in producing the feed motion of the slide MI and consequently the feed motion imparted to the lever I38. If, however, when the slide I II starts its forward movement, the cam follower I45 with which it will contact is nearer its lower limit of motion as th drum I46 revolves, a smaller length of the cam face I44 will be traversed by this cam follower and consequently a small amount of the movement of the slide I4I will occur with a consequent smaller amount of swinging motion imparted to the lever I33.
For the purpose of providing for various adjustments of the effective cam roll I45, the drum I45 is shown as provided with a series of holes I60 which are provided for selective reception of the pivot elements I5! on which the follower rolls I 45 are journaled, a suitable washer I62 and a nut I63 threaded on the inner end of the shank I6I being employed to secure the-cam 01- lower roll I45 in position. It will also be noted that due to the angular spacing of the various lobes l3 corresponding to the various indexed positions or stations of the turret, the forward motion of the slide I i-I is started at different angular positions of the control shaft 5 for the several index stations, and consequently it is possible to employ a different follower roll I45 for each of these stations, only one of these rolls being effective at one time against the cam face Each of the slides I52 is connected to its respective tool carrier by a similar mechanism. The forward ends of each of the slides I52 is forked at I15 and between the forks is pivoted on a vertical pivot I75, a bar Ill. The forward end of the bar II'I is provided on its lower face with a cam follower roll I13 which rides in an angle slot H9 in a guide plate I82) secured to a side face of the turret. This slot I'Iil from its rear end extends forwardly and to the left for substantially half its length and then it turns to the right for the remainder of its length. Thus the cam roll H8 as it passes lengthwise of this slot is caused to move first to the left and then to the right as it is moved inwardly by inward sliding of its slide I52. On its upper face, it carries, pivoted on a pivot I82, a slide block I83, and this slide block slidably engages in a groove i841 cut across the lower face of a disk I85. This disk I85 is journaled in a cylindrical bearing I39 which extends upwardly from a slide I (see Figure 16) which has downwardly extending side flanges ISI provided with outwardly extended feet I92 slidabl' guided beneath guide strips I93 overlying side guides IQ I to which the strips I93 are secured. The forward end of the slide is may be secured as by screws I95 to the rear end of a tool holder slide I5. This tool holder slide I5, as shown in Figure 1, is provided with grooves 2c! in its side edges for the reception of guide and retaining strips 22 which are secured as by screws to the faces of the turret II. Each slide I5 is also provided with a longitudinally extending T slot in its upper face at 2% to facilitate the attachment'thereto of a tool holder such as the tool holder 2&6 of Figure l carrying the drill I6.
The disk I85 which is journaled in the casing Ills is angularly adjustable in order to vary the angle of inclination of the slot IM to the perpendicular to the direction of motion of the slides I99 and I5. To this end the upper portion of the disk I85 may be provided with a worm portion are with which meshes a worm 2 car" ried by a horizontal shaft M2 provided with a knurled head 2I3 at its outer end by which it may be turned. This shaft 2I2 is suitably journaled in a portion 2M of the casing I89 and is held in position by a cap 2 I 5 secured as by screws ZIE. By turning the knurled head 243 it will be evident that the disk I85 may be angularly adjusted.
The casing its has secured to its upper face a ring 220 having a lateral extension 22! provided with an index mark 222. The disk I85 has a central hub portion 223 which extends through the ring 22% and to the top of this extension is secured as by screws 224, a circular cap having a downwardly tapered flange 225 overlying the ring 220 and provided with index markings cooperating with the mark 222 on the extension 22L For any given throw of the lever I38, the angular adjustment of the disk 2I'0 determines the extent or'them'astiedproduced b y tiie rotettion' of the cam 130i andtheslow-feecf-broduced there after: by' the rocking of the lever" -I 38- through the action of a; follower -I 45*on "the race cam" I44 The' efiects of this" angu-l'alr' adjustment of" the" disk =2I 0* for one position of f an actuating cam follower r011 I45- f orone' of the indexing sttions is -'shown'- diagrammatioall'vin Figures '34--to 4'1,-

0145-1 is brought oppositeto the arrow" 361 as that this distance 4.5 is in the row marked III. Another follower roll HIS-2 is then secured to the drum I46 opposite the arrow 304 as shown in Figure 22, this being the position for the second station. The drum 146 is then turned backwardly until the roll 145-2 for the second station is opposite to the arrow 391 as shown in Figure 23. Assuming that for the third station a slow feed of 1.2 inches is'desired, its disk 225 (Figure 24) is turned to present 1.2 opposite to the index mark 222 and it will be noted that this distance 1.2 is in the row II. With the follower roll for the second station still opposite to the arrow 30!, a follower roll HIE-3 for station 3 is fixed opposite to the index mark 393 as shown in Figure 25, and the drum I46 is then turned backwardly until this follower i i53 for the third station is opposite to the arrow 30L Assuming that at the fourth station a slow feed of 2.7 inches is desired, the disk 225 for the fourth station (Figure 2'?) is turned to bring the indication 2.7 opposite to the index point 222 and with the follower M5 for the third station still opposite to the arrow 3!. Another follower I454 for the fourth station is fixed opposite to the arrow 304 corresponding to the III column where the distance 2.? occurs, this being as shown in Figure 28. The cam drum M6 is then further moved backwardly until the cam roll 145-4 for the fourth station is opposite to the arrow 36!, as shown in Figure 29. Assuming at the fifth station the slow feed desired is .6, the disk 225 at the fifth station (Figure 30) is turned to bring this distance opposite to the index 222 and while the cam roll 245-4 for the fourth station is opposite to the arrow 39!, the fifth follower roll [45-5 is positioned opposite to the arrow 362 corresponding to the I row in which the distance .6 is found on the fifth station disk 225. The five cam follower rolls M5 are now arranged so that when the machine is in operation, the slow feed of the tools at the several stations will correspond with the desired distances.
The positions of these cam rolls M5 having thus been determined, the angular positions of the lobes 13 for the various stations are so adjusted that the indexing is started at the completion of the slow feed of each, and the rings 14 are then fixed in adjusted positions.
Figure 33 shows the positions of the five follower rolls I45 in a development of the cam drum I46. So long as any of these cam followers M5 are in operative relation, the cam drum MB is being turned at its low working speed. It is turned at its fast speed for the operation of stock feeding and other mechanisms for which fast rotation is desirable during the remainder of its angular extent, such fast speed being as shown, for example, in my Patent No. 2,506,515, tovwhich reference has already been made, but as the mechanisms for producing these other functions form no part of the present invention they are not further disclosed herein.
From the foregoing description of an embodiment of this invention, it should be evident to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications might be made without departing from its spirit or scope.
