Description

J. H. GOULD.
Stove Plate Cover. I No. 25,466; I Patented Sept, 13; 1859;
W; 57135 J71U8775 077:
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
J. H. GOULD, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND E. N. I-IARTSHORN, OF MOUNT UNION, OHIO.
COVER FOR STOVE-PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,466, dated September 13, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. H. GOULD, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Covers for Stove-Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, of which Figure 1, represents the circular cover in perspective showing the handle in two positions. Fig. :2, is a section taken through the cover showing the handle in two other positions.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a wire handle in such relation to the common circular or other shaped lid used for covering the boiler holes in the top plates of stoves, that said handle will always keep an erect position and at the same time will not be liable to be bent, or broken off, or be in the way, in using the top of the stove; described as follows:
The object of my invention is to have the handle of the coverlid permanently attached to it, and at the same time so attached as not to get hot, nor be in the way in using the top of the stove when the lid or lids are on.
A, represents a wire, bent so as to form a suitable handle to be used in removing and replacing the lid upon the stove. This handle is bent at its lower part so as to form fulcrum bearings 64, a, which rest upon either side of an aperture in the center of the cover B. A bent portion then projects slightly through the hole and passes through an eye 6, which is fixed to a disk or other suitable weight O, on the under side of the cover, and out of sight. This weight O, hangs slightly below the under side of the cover when the handle is erect and by its gravity keeps the handle in a vertical position, and should any thing be placed upon top of the stove this handle will lay flat upon the plate the weight being raised as indicated by the red lines of Fig. 2, and thus it will be seen the handle will not be in the way either when upon the stove or when off of it. The handle may be used also to hang the cover up by when not in use.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The self-erecting handle A, in combination with weight O, arranged essentially as, and for the purposes set forth.
