Description

3. 1'1. RICHARDSON. LAMP. AND LANTERN.
IlPatentPd. July 17, 1877.
UNITED STATES OQFIGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS AND LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [93,282, dated July 17, 1877; application filed June 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. RICHARDSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps and Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to so construct a lamp or lantern that the accumulation of the neighborhood of the in the following manner, reference being had 'tothe accompanying drawing, the figure of which represents a vertical section of part of a lantern with my improvement.
A represents the base or body of the lan-. tern, in which is formed the oil-reservoir B, provided with a burner, D, of any suitable character, the air necessary to support combustion entering through openings d in the sides of the body.
E is the ring which carries the globe or chimney F of the lantern, this ring being provided with pins a, adapted to angular slots in the body A, so that the said ring can be readily attached to or detached from said body. The ring E has upon the inside, near its lower end, an annular flange, b, which is, by preference, made of the dished form shown, the inner edge of this flange being slightly above the bottom of the burner, and extending to within a short distance of the sides of the same.
In ordinary lanterns there is always some leakage of oil at the point where the burner screws into the reservoir B, and the heating are generated, thus I of this oil causes the generation of an inflammable gas, which often accumulates in such quantities that, when ignited, it explodes with considerable force, extinguishing the flame, and, in some cases, breaking the globe F.
In my improved lantern, however, the air entering the openings at strikes the flange b, and is directed in a the base of the burner D, serving to carry oft any gases from that point as rapidly as they preventing such an accumulation of these gases as would render them inconvenient or dangerous.
The dished form of the flange b permits the ready and uninterrupted expansion of the air caused by the heat of the burner D.
by an accumulation of gases at that point is prevented, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH H. RICHARDSON.
Witnesses HERMANN MOESSNER, HARRY SMITH.
