UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. LUSBY AND SAMUEL G. BENTLEY, OF LE GRAND, IOWA; SAID BENTLEY ASSIGNOR TO SAID LUSBY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,141, dated September 11, 1877; application filed March 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN R. LUSBY and SAMUEL G. BENTLEY, of Le Grand, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Buckles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of our buckle, and Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention relates to harness-buckles; and it consists, mainly, in the combination of the devices hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates the main part of my buckle, which is provided at one end with a raised slotted plate, A and in the middle with a raised metal strap, A Said parts A A are adapted to allow trace-strap B to pass through them. 0 designates the tongue or l0cking-pin of the buckle, which works up through plate A under strap A*, being pressed upward by means of flat spring D. Said spring is attached by one end to the under side of said main plate A, and its free end is provided with a pressurerod, E, which passes up through said plate, and is provided with a thumb-piece, E, on
its upper end. Said spring is re-enforced by another spring, F, at right angles thereto, which is connected by one end to the under side of said main plate, and by the other end to the under side of said spring E,'immediately under said tongue or locking'pin C.
At the end of said buckle, opposite to raised plate A two perforated lugs, a a, are formed upon said main plate A, in which sets a detachable screw-threaded rod, G, which serves as a means of attachment for the strap H, whereby said buckle is secured to the hame. Said rod G may be held in place by means of an ordinary nut, or by screw-threads tapped in one of said lugs a. By removing said rod the said buckle is readily separated from said strap H. By pressing upon thumb-piece E, tongue 0 is withdrawn from trace-strap B, allowing said strap to be conveniently drawn through the buckle to tighten it, or removed altogether.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of main plate A, having metal strap A with tongue 0, springs D and F, and rod E, having thumb-piece E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN RANDOLPH LUSBY. SAMUEL GREEN BENTLEY. Witnesses:
