My invention relates to calculating a paratus of the type comprising a series 0 indicatmg discs rotatably mounted on axes in spaced relation to each other, with interme- '5 diate driving devices interposed between successive discs, each arranged to be driven by the 'disc to its right in the series and arranged to drive the disc to its left, 7 It is the object of my invention to provide improved interme- 0 diate driving devices adapted to cooperate with suitable justifying means whereby the indicating disc at the end of the series can be given a complete single step movement in either direction by power applied tothe indicating disc at the opposite end of'theseries with the power acting through only a similar single ste distance. For accomplishing this object, I'liave provided intermediate rotarydriving devices, each having short broad tooth portions by which power is applied to the device from the indicating disc at the right and having comparatively longer and narrower tooth portions projecting outwardly in centered position with respect to the short broad tooth portions for applying power from the device to the indicating disc attheleft.
It is another improvedevices of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. i The referred means by I-=-have accompllshed my objects are illustrated in the drawing and are hereinafter specifically described. Thatv which I believe to be new-is set forth in the claims.
On the drawing Fig. 1 is a plan view of one form of the invention, parts of the apparatusbeing-broken away in such'a manner that the right hand side of Fig. 1 markedI-I illustrates a plan of'the complete apparatus, whereas the middle part, marked M is shown with the top covering removed and the left hand side comprising the three left hand wheels is illustrated with also the numeral discs removed.

The tooth 0 is mounted so as to engage the toothed wheel d to the left, whereas the toothed wheel (1 to the right lies either above or below it so that no engagement between the tooth and that toothed wheel can take place As will be seen on the drawing the tooth c is integral with gear I), being however bent so as to be out of the' plane of the teeth on said gear 6. The arrangement as above described is efi'ected byinvertingfieachigear b as compared with the adjacent gears 12, and invertcent wheels (I, the gears I) being all alike and the Wheels d-beingall alike whereby thecost of manufacture is kept down.
The toothed wheels (2 are also provided with springs 9 carried by the casing and having their free end-portions in engagement with the teeth of the wheels for holding the wheels yieldingly in predetermined adjusted positions.v As will be readily understood, the springs f and g serve both as justifying means for assuring that the gears b and cl stop in the desired angular positions and also as auxiliary actuating means for the transmission of power from one member to another, as is usual in mechanisms of this type.

- volving the use of short br'oad tooth portions on the intermediate driving device at for enga'gement by the tooth or finger c of the indicating disc to the right, and the use of comparatively much longer and narrowertooth portions extending beyond the short broad tooth portions in centered position with re.- spect thereto for engaging the teeth of the gear of the indicating disc to the left, I am enabled to provide a structure comprising a comparatively small number of parts so arranged with respect to each other as to have eificient cooperation by which power applied to the indicating disc at the extreme right serving to give said disc one-tenth of a complete rotation may be transmitted through the entire train of mechanism for giving the indicating disc at the extreme left a similar movement comprising'one-tenth'of a com plete rotation. In the construction shown, each or" the numeral discs 71. is provided with a single set of indicia from 0 to 9 corresponding to the single tooth 0 carried by the attached gear. I). I do not restrict the invention to the use of a single tooth c, it beingunderstood that a diii'erent number of teeth 0 might be employed with a corresponding number of sets of indicia. Neither is the invention to be limited to the details of construction as shown except so far as the claims may be so limited by the prior art. 7
It will be understood that the arrangement involving the short broad tooth portions and the centrally arranged longer and narrower tooth portionson the intermediate di'ivin devices 11 is provided particularly with re erence to the successful transmission of power through a train comprising a considerable number of indicating be appreciated that the claims are to be construed in the light of the possibilities of the mechanism when used in an extended train of gearing even though the claims are not limited in terms to such use.
Claims r 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of indicating discs rotatably mounted on axes in spaced relation to each other, a gear connectedwith one of said indicating discs for rotation therewith, a finger connected with the other of said indicating discs for movement therewith, and toothed driving means rotatably mounted in operative relation to both said gear and said finger and comprising broad tooth portions with which said finger engages for rotating the driving device and comparatively longer and narrower tooth portions extending beyond the broad tooth portions adapted by engagediscs and gears.
