IMPROVEMENT IN lCONVERTIBLE LOUNGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 53,665, dated August 4, 1874 application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WM. BAILY CoATEs, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented va new and useful Improvement in Convertible Lounges 5v and I do hereby declare the following to be which- Figure l is a side elevation of the devicev embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the head-leaf. Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the foot-leaf. Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 1. Figs. 6 and 7 are views showing the lounge variously converted.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
This invention consists in the construction of a lounge and various appurtenances thereto, which may be folded and combined in coinpact form, and adapted to be converted into several articles of household use.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main or center frame, which is supported upon hinged legs B, adapted to befolded against the under side of the said frame A. The legs B are hinged to brackets B', which are secured to the under side of the center frame A. Such bracket consists of a horizontal plate, B,from which project vertical arms B", one of which is larger than the other, and to which a leg, B, is hinged. A shoulder, b', is formed on the leg, and when the leg is folded its hinged end moves in the channel between the arms B, the shoulder b coming over the short arm B. A rib or ribs may be applied to the' long arm, and it will be seen that the plates B connect and secure the corners of the center frame. The leg is lirmly jointed and braced, lateral play thereof is prevented, and the strength of the arm B is increased. G represents the foot frame or leaf, which is hinged to one end of the frame A, and D represents the head-leaf, which is hinged to the other end of -the frame, and folds over and on the frame C. The head-leaf D will be attached tion, also, the center frame may be formed the same at both ends, and when the parts are unfolded, as in Fig. 7, the head-leaf, center frame,
- and foot-leaf will be level, or continuous of each other, in the same right line. On the headleaf D is placed a removably-connected seatframe, G, whose under side has at one end a hook or catch, which enters a horizontal socket or slot formed in the head-leaf D, and at the other end a pin which enters an opening iny the said leaf at the end or side opposite to the slot, the hook and pin being shown at b b, Fig. 1, and the socket and opening. at c c, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents the under side of the head-leaf D, which will face uppermost Wh'en the seatframe G is removed. When the seatframe G and the leaves C D are in folded position, (shown in Fig. 1,) hooks or catches d d, respectively on the ends of the frame G and leaf C, engaging with the pins e e on the end of the leaf D, serve to connect the main frame A, leaves D C, and seat-frame Gr, and hold them in compact form, as seen in Figs. l and 5. H, Figs. 3 and 7, represents double or extensible legs, which consist of two legs hinged to and folding within the head-leaf D, the two parts or legs, when partially opened, being adapted to support the leaf D in a horizontal position, and when entirely swung out or opened, to support said leaf in an inclined position, both positions being shown at the right side of Fig. 7. Braces J and pins K are prof vided for keeping the legs properly extended. When the legs and braces are folded within the leaf D, they are held there bythe buttons or catch f, suitably applied. When the legs H are folded the pins or bolts K are not required for use, in which case they will be inserted into openings in the leaf D Aand held there by elastic loops f7, stretched from pins g, or by other appliances. (See Fig. 3.) L, in Fig. 3, represents straps, which are folded 3. The detachable seat-frame G, provided with hook and pin b b, and the head-leaf D, provided with socket and opening c c on its lower side,oo1nbined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The seat-frame G, in combination with the head and foot leaves, the eatohes d d and pins e e, and the center frame A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
5. The combination, With the head-leaf D, of the extensible legs H and braces J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The straps L, in combination with the hooks N and loops M of the leaf D, substantiall5r as aud for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination, with the strap L, of they hook-plates P, hinged to the leaf D, and arranged over the depression p of vsaid. leaf, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. The spread-brace and side guard W, coni sisting of tWo rods hinged to eaeh other, one of which is extended beyond the axis atp,
and the free ends are hooks, as at s, substan` tially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. The brace and guard W, band T, and
stretcher U, in combination with the head-leaf D, foot-leaf C, and center frame A,lsubstanl tially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM BAILY GOATES.
