GEORGE HASSIG, or PHILADELIEHIA, :BnNNsXLvANm- 'roy.
Application filed February 6, 1923, StriaLNa 517,259. lienewed July 24;.1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it :known that I, GEORGE HAssIG, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to a mechanical toy, and the object of the invention is the construction of'a simple and eflicient amusement device involving a figure device-and a firing device of a peculiar nature, which are simultaneously operated for producing entertainment or amusement for the operator. Another object of the invent-ion is the construction of a toy comprising a peculiar ly formed firing device and a figure device each connected to workin unison so that the desired amusing effect will be produced.
Vith these and other objects in yiew, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
mor particularly pointed outin the appended claims. V
In the drawings:
T Figure 1 is a viewin side elevation of a mechanical toy constructed in accordance with the present invention, while Figure 2 is a top plan view of thesame.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary, longitudinal, sectional view of the toy.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the ,toy. i I Figure 5 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the firing apparatus.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary, sectional view of the toy, showing particularly the figure device. r
Referring to the drawings bynumerals, -1 designates a plat-formsupported-by legs 2.
' A figure device 3 is 'mountedupon one end of the platform 1, and at the opposite end is mounted a firing device I The figure device .CQ-m'prises a rotatable table 5 connected to vertical shaft 6, and on the lower end of shaft 6, under platform-1, is abelt wheel 7;-\ the.leelt wheel 7 is securely fastened to shaft 6, so that rotation of the wheel will cause the table 5 to be likewise rotated. Hinged figures 8 are mounted upon the table 5 for the purpose of being forced or thrown inwardly when a shell 9 hits the same. A shield 10 is placed around the end of platform '1 contiguous to the firing device so that the projectiles or shells 9 are ordinarily prevented from falling off the ',pla't' form after they have struck 'a figurefS, or if they miss the figure ,atleast the shield 10 in most instances, prevents the shells from passing beyond the end of platform 1.
The shells 9 are mounted in apertures 11, and each is of a cylindrical shape; each shell is provided with an annulargroove 12, into which projects the ,inner edges of the two guide plates 13 of the firing device 4. The shells 9 pass down in slot 14 of thebody 15 dropping below the guide'; plates 13'and rest-- ing upon the sight piece 1'6.' Thesepl'ates 13 will serve to guide the shelljinto the proper position but since the she'll passies below their lower ends, they -wi'll not interefere with the forward movementoff {the shell whenfired. The inner end of'the shell bears against the spring lip 17 of "stop plate 18,]whicl 1 stop plate is secured to the .end of .body 15, Fig. 3. The lip 17 serves-as a 'yieldable fbumper to limit rearward movenientof the shell and prevent wedging of the shell when put in place A guide bracket 19 is placed contiguous to the rear end of body 15, and slidahly'mounted under guide bracket 19 is a sliding iplunger ,205 plunger 20 is adapted to strikethe,re'arend "of each of the shells 9 to throw it forward againsta hinged figure .8. A swinging arm 21 extends downwardly beyond th ':lower brackets 25 and through ears 22, pivotally end of platform 1',
, Journaled upon the two legs at the rear endof the platform is a shaftjj 27fwhieh shaft isj, provided at one end {with "hand wheel 28, for rotating the shaft. A belt wh-ee'l'j29 ifs fixedly secured to'the' shaft near mounting the swinging arm" upon, the rear its middle, and wheel 29 is pro'vide'd with a hub '30 and with fingers '31. Fingers "31 are adapted to engage the lower end of swinging arm 21 for causing the arm to swing or draw rearwardly upon plunger 20 and upon the finger leaving the arm 21, through the action of bowed spring 32, fastened, 'at33, to the platform 1, the plunger is forced forwardly with great rapidity and of sufficient strength to strike the shell, resting upon body 15 and cause said shell to be thrown forwardly and with sufficient force, engaging a figure 8 to throw it down upon table 5. A suitable belt 34 is positioned upon belt wheels 7 and 29, so that when the operator turns hand wheel 28 simultaneously with the firing of the firing device 4 a figure 8 will be placed in alignment with the sight piece 16 so that as a rule a shell 9, projected from vthe firing device willhit a hinged figure and wardly.
The bowed spring. 32 has its free end placed directly under the outer end of plunger 20, and above the aperture-d ears 22 (Figs. 2 and 8). This spring exerts a great amount of pressure, causing the sliding plunger to move rapidly forwardly, with great force, sufiicient to throw th shell against a figure and cause the same to hinge or swing over upon the table. 7
VVhile Ihave described the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same 1n the accompanying draw- "ings, certain minor changes oralterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invdntion relates, during the extensive .manufactureof the same and 1-, therefore,
reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of theappended claims. I a
l WVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the 'class described, the combination with a platform, of a rotatable table provided with figures on said platform, a belt wheel, means connecting said belt wheel to said rotatable table, a firing device on saidplatformincluding projectile ejecting means spring pressed in an ejecting direction, a second belt wheel contiguous to said firing device, said second belt wheel provided with a hub and with fingers for engaging the projectile ejecting means and moving the same against the. action of its of a projectil passed downwardly inthe slottedbody below the lower ends of the guide plates with its forward endresting upon said sight piece, and shell ejecting means contiguous to said stop plate and one end of said slot-ted body, 1 i
3. In a device of theclass described, the combination with a platform, and a target device onsaid platform, of a firing device on said platform for ejecting projectiles towards said figure device, said firing device comprising a shell-supporting body, I a bracket on the platform contiguous to one end of said body, a sliding plunger under said bracket having its inner end contiguous to said body, a. swinging arm provided with ape'rtured ears, a pivot pin carried by said body and passing-through said ears to pivotally mount said arm upon said platform,
said swinging arm provided with a tongue extending through said plunger, spring means yieldably holding said arm against swinging movement and with the plunger projected forwardly, and means for moving said swinging arm to cause the plunger to be moved rearwardly under the bracket and then releasing the arm to permit said spring means to move the plunger forwardly and eject the shell towards said target.
4;. In a device of the class described, the combination with a platforn'i," and a target device on said platform, of afiring device on said platform, said firing device comprising a slotted shell-receiving body,a stop plat secured to one end of said body, said stop plate provided with an outwardly bent spring lip registering with the slotin the body for engagement by the rear end of a projectile placed in the slotted body, a sliding plunger under said lip, spring means for forcing said plunger inwardly, and
meansfor drawing the plunger outwardly against the action of its spring and then release the plunger.
in testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature.
GEORGE 5 Hassm.
