Application filed September 6, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RAY RoBnsoN and Jorrn LEE, citizens of the United States, residing at VVithee, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snatch Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snatch blocks such as used in connection with hoisting and hauling tackle; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts 'lereinafter fully described and claimed whereby the cable or hoisting rope is readily placed into and out of engagement with the sheave in the block.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a snatch block constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the snatch block. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 2, showing the block open and the sheave removed.
The stationary side plate 6 of the block has an end plate 7 arranged at a right angle to it, and having a projecting tongue 8 at its middle part and shoulders 9 on its end portions. The movable side plate 10 is connected to the other end of the plate 6 from the end plate 7 by a hinge 12, and it has a slot 14 which engages with the tongue 8 when the block is closed, and the movable plate is resting on the shoulders 9.
he hinge end-15 of the block has an eye 16 for the attachment of one end of the usual anchor chain, and the hinged plate 10 has a hook 17 for the other end of the anchor chain to engage with. Any other ap proved form of anchoring device or connection may however be used, and a swivel may be provided if desired in the usual manner.
The sheave 20 for the cable or rope is journaled on a pin 21 provided with a head 22. The pin 21 is inserted loosely in a hole 24 in the side plate 6, and is held in place by a bracket 25 which extends over the pin head 22, and is riveted to the plate 6. The hinged side plate 10 has a hole 26 for engaging freely with the other end pin 21 when the block is closed.
Guard plates 27 are secured to the two side plates, and have beveled parts 28 which overlap the flanges of the sheave, and constrain the cable to engage with the groove of the sheave. A latch 30 is pivoted at its middle part by a pin 31 to lugs 32 on the tionary side plate portion of the Serial No. 498,608.
hinged plate 10. This latch has a beveled end portion 33 which overlaps the slot 14, and it has a groove 34 on its underside between the beveled end portion and the pivot. A spring 35 is arranged between the other end portion of the latch and the hinged plate 10, and is held in place by a projection 36 on the plate s10. A bail 37 is pfvoted by a pin 38 to lugs 39 on the stationary side plate 6 adjacent to the end plate 7, and when the block is closed this bail is raised so that it end portion of the hinged side plate, and engages with the groove 34 of the latch, and thereby holds the block securely closed. The latch is raised by contact of the bail'with the beveled end portion 33 so that the bail can slip into the groove. The block is opened by pressing the other end portion l0 so that the spring is compressed, and the bail is released from the notch. The cable or rope can be removed and replaced with facility when thehinged side plate is raised clear of the pin 20 on which the sheave is journaled.
What we claim is: 1. In a snatch block, a stationary side plate provided with end plates arranged at an angle to it and having also an anchoring device at one end, a movable side plate hinged to one end plate adjacent tothe said anchoring device and having at its free end portion means for end plate, and a bail pivoted to the sta adjacent to the last said end plate and adapted to overlap the free end portion of the hinged side plate and lock it in its closed position when turned crosswise of the said side plates. v 2. In a snatch block, a stationary side plate provided with an end. plate having a projecting tongue, a movable side plate hinged to the stationary side plate and provided with a slot for engaging with the said tongue, a bail pivoted to the stationary side plate and adapted to lock the hinged plate in engagement with the said tongue, and a latch pivoted to the hinged side plate and provided with a groove which looks the said bail when the block is closed.
3.-In a snatch block, a stationary side plate provided with an end plate having a projecting tongue, hinged to the stationary side plate and pro: vided with a slot for engaging with the overlaps the free engaging with the other a movable side plate' said tongue, a bail'pivoted to the stationary side plate and adapted to look the hinged other end portion of the latch and the hinged plate in engagement With the said tongue, at side plate.
latch having its middle portion pivoted to In testimony whereof We :tfiix our signa- 10 the hinged side plate and provided at one titres.
end portion with a beveled end and a groove which looks the said bail when the block RAY ROBESON.
is closed, and it spring arranged between the JOHN LEE.
