GRATE-BAR.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,142, dated January 22, 1856.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, JOHN T. OsoRN, of the city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction o-f Grate-Bars of Furnaces, of which the following is a full and eXact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making a part of the specification.

The nature of my invention and improvement consists in making, on the top of the ordinary grate bar, an additional piece, flat on its top, concave on its sides, and at its bottom, or lower side at its point of junction with the top of the ordinary grate bar form one fourth of one inch narrower than on its top, or opposite side, the concavity of its sides being such, that its thickness in the thinnest part, shall not be more than one fourth of its width at the top side. The jags which separate the grate bars and keep them at a proper distance apart, do not eX- tend up any farther than to the top of the form of the ordinary grate bars, which is to the lower side of my additional piece.

Description-A, is a side elevation; B, is a plan; C, is a transverse section, at o, through the center of the bar; D, is an end view; the space between the dotted lines F, G, is the addition which constitutes my improvement; H, is the bearing bar on which the ends of the grate bar rest; I, is the pillar that supports the bearing bar; K, is a sectional view of the boiler front, between the bottom of which and the top of the grate bar there is a space of about two inches; the space between the bottom side of the boiler front, and the line where my addition joins the top of the ordinary bar, being left v' entirely open to the atmosphere.

The object of my invention being thus, to provide a way by which the cold air will at all times, enter the cavity, in the sides of the bar, and passing its entire length, keep it cool, while at the same time, the furnace, is, in this manner supplied with air from the front, and independently of its admission in the usual manner, up through the grate bars, from below, in the ash pit, which is frequently so neglected, and filled up, as to obstruct the admission of the requisite amount of air for combustion, which in its passage would keep the bars cool; but when not supplied from beneath the grate bars, they become heated and destroyed; whereas my invention by admitting the air, also, at the front end, through the concavity, provides against such a neglect, and preserves the grate bars. The coals or cinders that may hang or lodge between my bars, not being liable to fill the concavity cannot obstruct the passage of air, which is always open behind them.

lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-

Increasing the height of ordinary grate bars of furnaces, by an addition to their top of a piece, having its sides concave, and without any jags in its entire length, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth, and I distinctly disclaim all other features of the grate bar described, except what I have specifically claimed.
