CHIN SUPPORT. FILED JuLYr. 1920.

lllatented dan@ il,
application 'llled July l, 19ml.
To all whom t may concern Be :it known that ll, FRANK U. lett/Con Lonen, a citizen of the 1United States, residing at Coshocton, in the county ot Coshocton and State olf Ohio, have invented a new and useful @hin Support, ot which the following1 is a specification.
By way of explaination it may be stated that when the chin ot a corpse is supported by an ordinary prop, extended between the chin and the chest, a nuinber ot disadvantages present themselves. For instance, ilE the corpse has chin whiskers, the whiskers, obviously, are disarranged by the prop. A common chin prop orten leads to the pro duction ot a dislignring` niark on the chin, notwithstanding the expediente known in the undertakers art. Uilen, an undertaker desires to shirt the position ot the trunk,
and such a shittino' cannot take place, with-I out taking away Flic support i'or the chin, it the chin is sustained by a prop extended between the chest and the chin.
Broadly considered, it is the object of this invention to provide a chin support which, in operation, will present none ot the disadvantages enumerated above.
llt is within the province ot the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility o'l, devices ot that type to which the invention appertains.
@ne liorin olthe invention is shown in the drawing, by way of illustration, but it is to be understood that, within the scope ot what is claimed, a mechanic niay make changes falling; `within his skill, without departing from the spiritot the invention or rendering; the article olf no utility.
lln the drawings :WFigure l shows, in end elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, mounted upon a head rest and sustaining the jaw ol a corpse; F igure 2 is a front elevation wherein parts appear in section; F ipgure 3. is an elevation showing a slight rnodilication in the jaw support.
ln carrying out the invention therev is provided a rneinber l, shaped as indicated at 2 to torni arms 3 which, preferably, are approximately parallel. The intermediate porw tion oi the inelnber l is connected in any suitable way, as shown at 4c, to a base plate 5. The arnis 3 are tubular, props 6 being),` longitudinally adjustable therein, the props being supplied at their upper ends with inclined cup-shaped heads i'. tiet screws S are threaded into the arins 3 and engage the props G, to hold the props in adjusted posi tions.
ln practical operation, the member l is placed astride the neclr of a corpse, the base plate (i being supported on the rest 9 which carries the head ont the corpse, the members 7 engaging the jaw below the ears and at the angles of the jaw. 'lhe set screws 8 niay be loosened, and the props 6 may be raised and lowered., so as to engage properly with the angles oi the jaw. When an adjustment in the distance between the props is desired, the prop tia ot Figure 3 niay be used, the prop being offset as shown at l0, so that the head 7a is set inwardly. Clearly, when the distance between the angles of the jaw, measured transversely, is not great, the prop shown in Figure 3 may be used instead ol the prop shown in Figure 2. Further, one of the props shown in Figure 3 inay be used with one of the props shown in Figure 2.
rllhe device -forming' the subject matter of this application is so constructed that it will leave no mark on the chin. Since the device does not engage the chest ot the corpse, the trunlr :may be shifted without taking away the support for the chin. lt will be obvious, troni an inspection olf F igure l, that if the corpse should happen to have chin whiskers, the whiskers will not be disarranged when the jaw is supported by the device shown. The prop at one side niay be raised or lowered independently of the prop at the other side, and by this operation, the head of the corpse can be turned as occasion may demand.
