WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29. 19I.
Patented Nov. I I, 1919.
IILhIIII @Home x1 STEPHEN STEPANIAN, 0F COLUMBUS, HIQ
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application med Hay 29, 1918. Serial No. 237,289.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN STEPANIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cd lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
llliis invention relates to wrenches, has for its primary object to provide an i'mproved and eiiicient form of tool possessing novel features of construction which render the' same particularly useful in effecting the adjustment of .grease cups, pet cocks and other similar objects. h
Another object of the invention resides in a wrench of this character wherein is provided an integral metallic body, formed to include an elon ated handle and a socketed head portion, t e latter comprising a plu rality of tapering, separated finger elements which are formed ,internally to provide a substantially conical concavity, the walls of the latter being stepped toproduce ity of sockets of varying diameters, whereby the wrench will be capable of 'firmly grippin for rotation various sized threaded bodies, and the openings formed between the finger elements being capable of receiving the handle members of the type found upon grease cups of certain formation, or upon pet cocks or the like, whereby the latter handles may be conveniently operated and their adjustments effected through the use of my improved wrench.
The invention consists in the novel fea- 4 tures of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, eompanying .drawin lined in the claims ereunto appende Inthe drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench comprising the preferred form of the in. f
vention, V
Fig. 2 is. an enlarged vertical sectional view taken through the socketed head member thereof, and b Fig. 3 is a plan view of said head memlike and corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring more :particularly to the man- `ner of constructing the preferred form of my invention, I employ a wrench 1, which in this instance consists of an integral meand illustratedin the acv 'and particularl de its several oerating Similar characters of referencedienote A A,ing particularly 'adapted tallic body, formed to include an elongated T shaped handle 2, and an integral, flaring head member 3. This head member consists of a plurality of tapering, separated finger elements 4, which provide therebetween a plurality of substantially V shaped openin 5. he inner faces of the elements 4 are upwardly tapered to provide a substantially conical cap receiving socket 6, which socket in this instance is stepped so that the socket is considerably varied at different positions throughout its length in diameter, and the faces of said finger elements forming the socket 6v are formed with serrated teeth 7,
the latter enabling the wrench to readily' grip for rotation in a positive and secure manner the caps 8 of grease cups 9.
By virtue of th's construction it isjnot necessary to taper to such extentA as to interfere with the' 'grip they afford uponthe caps 8. Since if the taper of -said socket were ,continuous as shown in copending ap lication, bearing Serial umber 204,161 27, 1917, the area of gripping relation existing between the walls of the socket 6 and the ca 8 is comparatively small, and ofttii'nes this permits the wrench to slip when being' rotated. However, by stepping the socket, the gripping area of the latter is considerably enlarged, so that the said cap firmly clutched for uniform rotation therewith. In the event of a grease cup being provided withy a cap formed with a handle, the latter ma be rotated by inserting the wrench in .suc manner that the handle will be caught between the `finger elements 'by bein positionedin certain of the openings 5, w ereby uponrevolving the wrench, said handle may be ectively ositions. In the saine manner the andle o a pet cock or the like may be received ,within one of the openin s 5 so that the operation of the valve may e easily effected.
From the fore ing description, taken in connection with t e accompanying drawing,
the walls ot the socket 6' led November' ratenteaN0v.11,191e.
s will be' rotated to assume convenient manner without soiling-the opfrom eaeh other to present longitudinallyzo erators clothing, or'causing him to assume arranged openings therebetween, the inner awkward positions. Through the use of the surfaces of said fingers being formed to prestepped socket 6, the wrench is enabled to sent steps of increasing size whose inner rotate all the grease cup caps found upon surfaces are inclined downwardly and outmotor vehicles .of standard design, and this wardly and a plurality of longitudinally ar- 25 A is accomplished without adjusting or alranged gripping teeth defining the inner tering the socket in any manner to comply sur aces of said step ed lingers. with proportions of the grease cups. Fur- 2. A Wrench of t e character described, thermore, the taper of the walls forming comprising an integral metallic bod the socket 6 is.relatively small, so that a formed to include an elongated-handle and a 30 clutching area of considerable extent is prosocketed head portion, said latter comprisvided, which would not otherwise be afing al plurality of tapering finger elements fox-ded through the use of a continuous spaced to provide substantially V shaped taper. i o enings therebetween, and the inner faces I claim: o said linger elements being stepped to pro- 35 1. A wrench of the character described, vide sockets of varying diameters. comprising a socketed head ortion formed In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
of a plurality of finger e amants `spaced l STEPHEN STEPANIAN.
