Inventor Attorneys' JOSE RAMN AVELLANAL, or TAMPA, FLORIDA.
CIGAR BOX 01?. WRAPPING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 6, 1914..
Application filed October 27, 1913. Serial No. 797,594.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, Josn' R. AVELLANAL,
a citizen of the United States, residing ati Tampa, in the county of Hillsboro and Statei of Florida, have invented a new and usefulf Cigar Box or /Vrapping, of which the fo'l-' i The closures 12 are bent transversely, in
lowing is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a box made i from paper, card board or the like, and;
I bending last above referred to adapted to contain cigars.
The invention aims to improve the general construction of the box, so that the same a side wall 17, and the sidewall 17 is bent transversely along lines 18 to form primary may be fashioned from a single strip of ma terial, and to improve the box, so far as reinforcement, reduction in the number of parts, and the securing of a maximum ca-. pacity are concerned.
It is within the scope of the invention to provide a box which may be fashioned with a minimum amount of cutting,
and with a minimum amount of loss of material, the,
box being unusually strong and being reinforced to resist compressive efl'orts.
"With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and' in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows one form of the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the box, however, being closed; Fig. 4 is a plan of the blank from which the box shown in Fig. 1 is fashioned.
One of the boxes forming the subject matter of this application, and shown in Figs.
1 to 4 both inclusive, is fashioned from a blank which is depicted in Fig. 4. This blank shown in Fig. 4 comprises a body 1 notched adjacent its ends as shown at 2. The body 1 is provided with longitudinal slits 3. Projecting from one side of the body 1 is a wing 4, notched in its longitudinal edges as shown at 5, adjacent the body 1. When fashioning a box from the blank depicted in Fig. 4,,the body portion 1 .of the blank is bent along a line 6 to form a side wall 7, as shown best in Fig. 2. Adjacent its ends, the side wall 7 is bent along transverse lines 8 to form primary tongues 9. The line of bending indicated at 6 results in the formation of a side wall 10. The side wall 10, corresponding to the body. 1 of the blank is bent transversely adjacent its edges, as indicated at 11 to form terminal closures 12.
alinement with the ends of the tongues 9 to form a secondary tongue 15, the lines of being indicated at 14.
The body 1 is bent along a line 16 to form tongues 19. The side wall 17 is bent as shown at 20, so that the base or inner part 21 of the wing 4 of the blank becomes a side wall 22, located opposite to the side wall 10. The wing 24 is bent along a line 23 to form a reinforcing strip 24. The reinforcing strip 24 lies inside of the side wall 7. The wing 4 is bent as indicated at 25 to form an intermediate reinforcing strip 26 which lies along the side wall 10 adjacent the side wall 7. The wing 4'is bent as shown at 27 to form a partition 28 located at right angles to the walls 22 and 1.0. The wing 4 is again bent as shown at 29 to form a connecting strip 30 lying parallel to the wall 22. This connecting strip 30 is not secured to the wall 22. The wing 4 is bent as shown at 31 to form a partition 32, disposed parallel to the partition 28. The wing 4 of the blank 1s agam bent as shown at 33 to form a terminal reinforcing strip 34 lying against the wall 10, adjacent the wall 17, the strips 34 and 26 lying adjacentthe extreme edges of the box. By means of glue or cement, the reinforcing strip 24 is secured to the side wall 7, the reinforcing strip 26 being secured to the side wall 10, and the reinforci ing strip 34 being alsosecured to the side wall 10. The box as thus far described appears as depicted in Fig. 1.
In order to close the box, the primary tongues 9 and 19 are folded inwardly, and the terminal closures 12 are folded over on top of the primary tongues, thesecondar tongues 15 being inserted between the wa 22 of the box and connecting strip 30. The partitions 28 and 32 and connecting strip 30 serve to define an intermediate cell in the box, and the crown of the cell is represented by the connecting strip 30; It is to be noted that it is not necessary to notch the secondary tongues 15 transversely, in order to accommodate the partitions 28 and 32, because the primary tongue 17 lies between the crown 30 of the cell and the side wall 22.
Although, in Fig. 3, the connecting strip 30 is shown as spaced from the wall 22 it will be understood that, owing to the nature of the material from which the box is fashioned, the connecting strip 30 will act as a reinforcement for the wall 22, should the same yield inwardly.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A box fashioned from a blank folded upon itself to form an outer wall at the eX- treme outer edges of the box and to form an inner wall comprising intermediate and terminal reinforcing portions lying against a single side of the outer wall, the outer wall having a notch in its end and the inner Wall being folded upon itself to form a rectangular intermediate cell disposed symmetrically with respect to the outer edges of the box and including a flat crown which extends entirely across the notch, the outer wall having a closure flap extended between the fiat crown of the cell and the outer wall and accessible through the notch, the flat crown of the cell constituting a support for.
the flap immediately below the notch and throughout the entire extent of the notch.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSE RAMON-AVELLANAL.
