IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-DESKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,467, dated July 25, 1871.

To all whom t may concern;

Be it known that I, JAMES RUSSEL, of Plymouth, in the county of Marshall and Vin the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Desk; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a school-desk, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the sa1ne,I will now proceed to describe its con.- struction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my schooldesk, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of one ofthe lids for the same.

The end pieces of my school-desk are each formed of two pieces, A and B, the part A forming the main portion of the end, including the desk-rest and the front leg, while the other part B forms the hind leg and the seat-support. In the center of the desk is also a somewhat similar support, marked A and B. The parts A and B of each end piece are let into each other and fastened together by pins, bolts, or screws, as shown in Fig. 1. The back O may be either straight, as shown in the drawing, or convex, as indicated by the dotted line a a. The seat is double, each part D being' hinged separately to the lower edge ofthe back C, and when let down is supported upon rubber blocks b b inserted in the front seat-supports B B and B. Between the upper part of the end pieces A A is formed the book-case E, divided by a transverse partition into two parts, each provided with a lid, Gr, hinged to `a strip, H, in rear of the back C. The outer edges of the lids G G are supported upon rubber blocks b', and -upon the under side of each lid is attached a strap, al, the other end of which is attached to the under side of the strip H, this strap thus acting as a stop for raising the lid so that it cannot be thrown over forward. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g The combination of the end pieces A B, back G, bisected seat D, box E, lids G, strip H, rubber blocks b b, and straps d, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
