Abstract

통신케이블로 연결된 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하는 호스트장치를 개시한다. 본 호스트장치는 통신케이블을 통해 수신되는 외부장치의 신호를 검출하여, 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하는 외부신호검출부, 소정의 메시지를 출력하는 표시부, 및 외부신호검출부에 의해 외부장치의 이상여부가 감지되면, 이상여부를 표시하는 소정의 경고메시지를 표시부에 표시하는 제어부를 포함한다. 이에 따라 외부장치의 이상여부를 사용자에게 통지할 수 있게 된다.

본 발명은 통신케이블로 연결된 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하는 호스트장치 및 그 방법에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세하게는 외부장치의 전원라인이상, 데이터전송라인이상을 감지하여 사용자에게 통지하는 호스트장치 및 그 방법에 관한 것이다.
최근들어, MP3 플레이어, PDA(Personal Digital Assistant)등과 같은 외부장치의 소형화 및 경량화를 위해 전원부를 외부장치에 구비하지 않고, PC(Personal Computer)와 같은 호스트(Host)장치로부터 전원을 공급받게 되었다. 마찬가지로, 셋탑박스가 소형화 및 경량화 되면서 DTV세트로부터 통신케이블을 통해 전원을 공급받기도 한다. 외부장치가 호스트장치와 USB케이블과 같은 통신케이블로 연결되면, 외부장치는 호스트장치로부터 전원을 공급받고, 호스트장치와 데이터통신을 수행한다.
도 1은 종래의 호스트장치에서 외부장치로 전원을 공급하는 예를 나타낸 블럭도이다. 도 1을 참고하면, 호스트장치(10)는 전원부(12), 전원보호부(14), 및 통신포트(16)를 포함한다. 전원부(12)는 교류전원(19)으로부터 110V, 및 220V의 교류전원을 입력받은 후, 호스트장치(10) 및 외부장치(18)의 정격범위에 대응되는 전원 으로 변환한다. 전원보호부(14)는 전원부(12)에서 외부장치(18)의 정격범위를 초과한 전원을 외부장치(18)로 공급하는 경우, 외부장치(18)와 전원부(12)간의 접속을 차단한다. 즉, 외부장치(18)의 전원라인이 접지되거나 데이터전송라인과 단락(Short Circuit)되는 경우를 예로 들면, 이때 전원부(12)에서 외부장치(18)로 과전류가 공급되므로 이를 차단하기 위해 퓨즈(Fuse)와 같은 전원보호부(14)를 구비한다. 혹은, 전원부(12)의 내부문제로 외부장치(18)로 이상전원이 공급될 경우, 이를 전원보호부(14)가 차단한다. 통신포트(16)에는 외부장치(18)와 연결하기 위한 통신케이블이 접속된다.
이와 같은 종래의 방법에 있어서, 호스트장치(10)에 외부장치(18)를 연결할 경우, 외부장치(18)로 공급되는 전원이 차단되어 외부장치(18)가 동작하지 않게되면, 사용자는 호스트장치(10)의 문제인지 외부장치(18)의 문제인지를 판단할 수 없어 적절한 조치를 취하지 못하게 된다.
따라서, 본 발명의 목적은 통신케이블로 연결된 외부장치에 이상이 발생한 경우, 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하여 화면에 표시함으로써 사용자에게 외부장치에 이상이 발생했다는 사실을 통지할 수 있는 호스트장치를 제공함에 있다.
상기 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 호스트장치는 통신케이블을 통해 적어도 하나의 외부장치와 통신하며, 상기 통신케이블을 통해 수신되는 상기 외부장치의 신호를 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하는 외부신호검출부, 소정의 메시지를 출력하는 표시부, 및 상기 외부신호검출부에 의해 상기 외부장치의 이상여부가 감지되면, 상기 이상여부를 표시하는 소정의 경고메시지를 상기 표시부에 표시하는 제어부를 포함한다.
여기서, 상기 외부신호검출부는 상기 통신케이블을 통해 공급되는 전원을 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 전원라인 이상여부를 감지하는 것을 특징으로 한다. 또한, 상기 외부신호검출부는 상기 통신케이블을 통해 전송되는 데이터의 신호레벨 및 신호파형을 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 데이터전송라인 이상여부를 감지하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
상기 호스트장치는 USB(Universal Serial Bus)방식, IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)1394 방식, DVI(Digital Visual Interface)방식, 및 PCMCIA(Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)방식 중 하나의 방식에 따른 통신케이블을 사용하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
한편, 적어도 하나의 외부장치와 통신케이블로 연결된 호스트장치의 이상여부 감지방법은 상기 통신케이블을 통해 수신되는 상기 외부장치의 신호를 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하는 단계, 및 상기 이상여부가 감지되면, 상기 외부장치의 이상여부에 대응되는 메시지를 출력하는 단계를 포함한다.
가장 바람직하게는 상기 이상여부를 감지하는 단계는, 상기 외부장치의 전원라인 이상여부를 감지하는 단계, 및 상기 외부장치의 데이터전송라인 이상여부를 감지하는 단계인 것을 특징으로 한다.
이하에서는 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명을 보다 상세하게 설명한다.
도 2는 본 발명의 일실시예에 따른 호스트장치의 개략적인 블럭도이다. 본 호스트장치(100)는 전원부(110), 전원보호부(120), 통신포트(130), 외부신호검출부(140), 제어부(150), 및 표시부(160)를 구비한다.
전원부(110)는 교류전원(180)으로부터 110V, 혹은 220V의 교류전원을 입력받은 후, 호스트장치(100) 및 외부장치(170)를 동작시키기 위한 전원을 각각 공급한다. 즉, 교류전원(180)을 호스트장치(100) 및 외부장치(170)의 정격범위에 대응되는 전원으로 각각 변환하여 각각의 장치에 공급한다.
전원보호부(120)는 전원부(110)에서 공급되는 전원이 외부장치(170)의 정격범위를 초과한 경우, 외부장치(170)와 전원부(110)간의 접속을 차단한다. 예를 들어, 통신케이블의 전원라인이 단락(Short Circuit)되거나, 외부장치(170)의 연결에 오류가 발생하여 큰 부하(Load)가 발생하면, 전원보호부(120)를 통해 과전류가 통과한다. 이 경우, 전원보호부(120)는 과전류가 외부장치(170)로 흐르는 것을 방지하기 위해 전원공급을 차단하게 된다.
통신포트(130)에는 외부장치(170)와 연결하기 위한 통신케이블이 연결된다. 외부장치(170)와 연결되는 통신케이블에는 USB(Universal Serial Bus), IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)1394, DVI(Digital Visual Interface), 및 PCMCIA(Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) 등 외부장치(170)와 연결되어 전원공급과 함께 데이터통신을 수행하는 통신케이블이 모두 포함된다.
외부신호검출부(140)는 외부장치(170)의 전원라인이상, 데이터전송라인이상 을 감지한다. 전원이 공급되면 통신케이블의 전원라인을 통해 전원공급에 이상이 있는지를 감지한다. 그리고 나서, 통신케이블의 데이터전송라인의 이상여부를 감지한다.
표시부(160)는 외부신호검출부(140)에서 감지한 이상여부에 대응되는 메시지를 화면에 표시한다. 즉, 전원라인을 통해 전원라인의 이상을 감지한 경우, '외부장치의 전원라인에 이상이 있습니다.'와 같은 메시지를 화면에 표시하고, 데이터전송라인의 이상을 감지한 경우, '외부장치의 데이터전송라인에 이상이 있습니다.'와 같은 메시지를 화면에 표시한다.
제어부(150)는 외부장치(170)와 통신하기 위한 데이터를 통신포트(130)를 통해 송신 및 수신한다. 또한, 외부장치(170)의 이상여부를 감지하도록 외부신호검출부(140)를 제어한다. 즉, 외부장치(170)가 통신포트(130)에 접속되면, 접속여부를 감지하여 전원을 공급하도록 전원부(110)를 제어한다. 또한, 전원이 외부장치(170)에 공급되면 전원라인을 통해 전원이상을 감지하고, 데이터전송라인을 통해 외부장치(170)의 오동작여부를 감지하도록 외부신호검출부(140)를 제어한다. 그리고, 검출된 이상여부에 대응되는 메시지를 표시부(160)를 통해 출력한다.
도 3은 본 발명의 호스트장치 및 외부장치를 연결하는 통신케이블의 예를 나타낸 도면이다. 도 3의 통신케이블은 USB케이블이다. USB(Universal Serial Bus)방식은 직렬방식과 동일하지만 직렬방식보다 더 빠르고, 호스트장치(100)에 최대 127개까지 외부장치(170)들을 연결할 수 있다. 또한, 외부장치(170)는 USB케이블을 통해 호스트장치(100)와 데이터통신을 수행하고, 호스트장치(100)로부터 전원을 공급 받는다. 일반적으로 하나의 USB케이블을 통해 대략 5V/500mA의 전원을 호스트장치(100)에서 외부장치(170)로 공급해 줄 수 있다.
도 3을 참고하면, USB케이블은 4개의 라인으로 구성되어 있다. Vbus라인은 전원부(110)로부터 외부장치(170)에 전원을 공급하는 라인으로 Vbus라인이 GND라인이나 데이터전송라인과 단락(Short Circuit)되면, Vbus라인을 통해 과전류가 흐르게 되고, 이를 전원보호부(120)에서 차단한다. 이때, 외부신호검출부(140)는 Vbus라인을 통해 외부장치(170)의 정격범위를 초과한 전원을 감지한다. GND라인은 호스트장치(100) 및 외부장치(170)의 그라운드를 연결하는 라인으로써, 제어부(150)는 GND라인을 통해 외부장치(170)의 접속여부를 감지한다. D+ 및 D- 라인은 호스트장치(100) 및 외부장치(170)간의 통신을 위한 라인으로써, 초당 12Mbps의 속도로 데이터를 전송한다. 이때, 외부신호검출부(140)는 D+ 및 D- 라인의 신호레벨 및 신호파형 등을 검출하여 외부장치(170)에 이상이 있는지 여부를 감지한다.
도 4는 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 호스트장치 및 이와 연결된 복수의 외부장치를 나타낸 블럭도이다. 도 4에 따르면, 호스트장치(200)에는 복수의 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)가 통신케이블로 연결된다. 전원부(210)는 호스트장치(200)와 소정의 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)가 연결되면, 연결된 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)에 전원을 공급한다. 이때, 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)에 정격범위를 초과한 전원이 공급되면, 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)에 대응되는 전원보호부(230-1, 230-2, ..., 230-n)에서 전원부(210)의 전원공급을 차단한다.
외부신호검출부(240)에서는 호스트장치(200)에 연결된 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)의 전원라인, GND라인, 데이터전송라인을 통해 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)에서 발생되는 이상여부를 감지한다. 감지한 이상여부를 제어부(250)로 전송하고, 제어부(250)는 표시부(260)를 제어하여 외부장치(270-1, 270-2, ..., 270-n)의 이상여부를 화면에 표시하여 사용자에게 전달하도록 한다.
도 5는 본 발명의 호스트장치에서 외부장치의 이상여부를 화면에 표시한 예를 나타낸 도면이다. 도 5는, DTV(300)와 같은 호스트장치와 셋탑박스(340)와 같은 외부장치를 USB케이블(320)로 연결한 예를 나타낸 도면이다. DTV(300)에 연결된 셋탑박스(340)에 이상여부가 발생한 경우, 이를 화면에 표시한다. 즉, DTV(300)에서 USB케이블(320)의 전원라인을 통해 감지된 전원라인이상을 사용자에게 '셋탑박스의 전원라인에 이상이 있습니다'와 같은 OSD를 통해 전달한다.
도 6은 본 발명의 호스트장치에서 외부장치의 이상여부를 화면에 표시하는 방법을 설명한 흐름도이다. 도 6에 따르면, 먼저 통신케이블의 GND라인을 감지하여 외부장치(170)가 통신포트(130)에 접속되어 있는지 확인한다. 외부장치(170)가 통신포트(130)에 접속되어 있으면(S410), 전원부(110)에서 외부장치(170)로 전원을 공급한다(S420). 여기서, 만약 외부장치(170)가 연결되어 있지 않은 경우, '외부장치가 연결되어 있지 않습니다'와 같은 메시지를 표시한다(S430).
전원라인을 감지하여 전원이 정상적으로 공급되고 있는지 확인한다. 전원공급이 정상적으로 이루어지면(S440), 데이터전송라인을 감지하여 데이터전송라인에 이상이 있는지 확인한다(S450). 데이터전송라인에 이상이 없다고 판단되면(S460), 호스트장치(100)와 외부장치(170)간의 통신을 시작한다(S470). 만약, 단계 S440에서 외부장치의 전원라인에 이상이 발생하면, '외부장치의 전원라인에 이상이 있습니다'와 같은 메시지를 표시하여 사용자에게 알린다(S480). 또한, 단계 S460에서 데이터전송라인에 이상이 감지되면, '외부장치의 데이터전송라인에 이상이 있습니다'와 같은 메시지를 표시하여 사용자에게 알린다(S490). 이와 같은 과정을 통해 외부장치(170)이 이상여부를 감지하여 사용자에게 전달할 수 있다.
이상 설명한 바와 같이 본 발명에 따르면, 외부신호검출부를 통해 외부장치의 이상여부를 감지하여, OSD등의 메시지로 화면에 표시함으로써 사용자에게 외부장치의 이상여부를 전달할 수 있게 된다.
또한, 이상에서는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시 예에 대하여 도시하고 설명하였지만, 본 발명은 상술한 특정의 실시 예에 한정되지 아니하며, 청구범위에서 청구하는 본 발명의 요지를 벗어남이 없이 당해 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 누구든지 다양한 변형 실시가 가능한 것은 물론이고, 그와 같은 변경은 청구범위 기재의 범위 내에 있게 된다.

Claims (7)

  1. 통신케이블을 통해 적어도 하나의 외부장치와 통신하는 호스트장치에 있어서,
    상기 외부장치로 전원이 공급되는 경우, 상기 통신케이블을 통해 수신되는 상기 외부장치의 신호를 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 동작상태에 대한 이상여부를 감지하는 외부신호검출부;
    소정의 메시지를 출력하는 표시부; 및
    상기 외부신호검출부에 의해 상기 외부장치의 동작상태에 대한 이상발생이 감지되면, 상기 외부장치의 동작상태에 대한 이상발생을 나타내는 경고메시지를 표시하도록 상기 표시부를 제어하는 제어부;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 호스트장치.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 외부신호검출부는 상기 통신케이블을 통해 공급되는 전원을 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 전원라인 이상여부를 감지하는 것을 특징으로 하는 호스트장치.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 외부신호검출부는 상기 통신케이블을 통해 전송되는 데이터의 신호레벨 및 신호파형을 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 데이터전송라인 이상여부를 감지하는 것을 특징으로 하는 호스트장치.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 통신케이블은 USB(Universal Serial Bus)방식, IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)1394 방식, DVI(Digital Visual Interface)방식, 및 PCMCIA(Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)방식 중 하나의 방식에 따른 통신케이블인 것을 특징으로 하는 호스트장치.
  5. 적어도 하나의 외부장치와 통신케이블로 연결된 호스트장치의 이상여부 감지방법에 있어서,
    상기 외부장치로 전원이 공급되는 경우, 상기 통신케이블을 통해 수신되는 상기 외부장치의 신호를 검출하여, 상기 외부장치의 동작상태에 대한 이상여부를 감지하는 단계; 및
    상기 외부장치의 동작상태에 대한 이상발생이 감지되면, 상기 외부장치의 동작상태에 대한 이상발생을 나타내는 경고메시지를 표시하는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 호스트장치의 이상여부 감지방법.
  6. 제5항에 있어서,
    상기 이상여부를 감지하는 단계는,
    상기 외부장치의 전원라인 이상여부를 감지하는 단계인 것을 특징으로 하는 호스트장치의 이상여부 감지방법.
  7. 제5항에 있어서,
    상기 이상여부를 감지하는 단계는,
