Abstract

PURPOSE:To determine urea quantitatively, by turning NH4<+> or NH3 produced by decomposing urea by urease enzyme into gaseous NH3 by adding a chemical reagent and after that, absorbing this gas in an acidic solution. CONSTITUTION:A solution to be measured introduced from an introducing opening of the solution to be measured 21 is passed through a urease immobilization enzyme 22 and urea in the solution to be measured is converted into NH3 or NH4<+>. A chemical reagent such as NaOH is added to this solution to be measured from a chemical reagent addition opening 27 and NH3, NH4<+> are turned into gaseous NH3. After that, the solution to be measured is entered to the second room 4 of a flow cell 1. On th other hand, an absorption solution 26 such as HCl is introduced into the first room 3 of the flow cell 1 and is reacted with NH3 permiting a gas permeable membrane 2. The reaction of the solution 26 with gaseous NH3 in the room 3 is detected as the variation of electric conductivity of the solution 26 by electrodes 7, 7'. The concentration of urea in the solution to be measured is determined from the variation quantity of this electric conductivity.
