Abstract
PURPOSE:A gel such as silica gel resulting from hydrolysis is formed into a rod or cylinder and made into sintered glass by heat treatment, thus preventing the development of cracks on the heat treatment and producing transparent glass in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A gel-forming solution such as a basic solution of Si(OCH3)4 in methanol and water is heated in a cylindrical vessel to cause hydrolysis to form a cylindrical gel. Then, the resultant cylindrical gel is sintered in an He gas in an electric furnace, e.g., at 1,200-1,300 deg.C. In case of sintering a cylindrical or rod gel, the time required to form the objective transparent glass becomes short by about one order compared with the case where a disk with the same thickness is sintered. The contraction of the treatment time accompanies the remarkable reduction in the crack formationand foaming during the treatment.
