Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the efficiencies of treatment and utilization of methane by using hollow fibrous membranes as support bodies for organisms layers, introducing gaseous methane or a gas contg. gaseous methane in said membranes and supplying gaseous methane to the organisms layers.
CONSTITUTION: Support bodies of hollow fibrous membranes for organisms layers are put into water contg. nitrate and/or nitrite nitrogen, and gaseous methane or a gas contg. gaseous methane is supplied into the hollow fibrous membranes to supply the gaseous methane to the organisms layers formed on the outside surfaces of the hollow fibrous membranes through the wall surfaces of the hollow fibrous membranes, whereby the water to be treated is subjected to a denitrification treatment. Polyolefin, fluorinated polyolefin, polyester, etc. are suitable as the blank material for forming the hollow fibrous membranes, and the structure of the membranes may be any of homogeneous membranes, microporous uniform membranes, or asymmetrical porous membranes, of which the microporous membranes of high gas permeability are more preferable.
