Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite roll for rolling with wear, surface roughening and crack resistances by metallurgically combining a high hardness tough outer shell having a specified composition of a lowered Ni content with a tough inner shell with less residual crack having a specified composition.
CONSTITUTION: The outer shell is made of alloy consisting of 2.3W2.9% C, 0.5W 1.0% Si, 0.5W1.0% Mn, ≤0.1% P, ≤0.1% S, 3.8W4.8% Ni, 1.7W2.5% Cr, 0.4W 1.0% Mo and the balance being substantially Fe, and the inner shell is made of alloy consisting of 3.0W3.8% C, 1.0W1.8% Si, 0.3W1.0% Mn, ≤0.1% P, ≤0.1% S, ≤2.0% Ni, ≤1.0% Cr, ≤0.5% Mo and the balance being substantially Fe. The shells are cast to form a composite roll, which is then heat treated at about 250W 400°C more than twice to decompose the residual austenite and relieve the residual stress.
