Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled resin excellent in salt resistance and useful as a soil conditioner, a urine absorbing material, a blood absorbing material, etc., by copolymerizing an acrylic acid with a specified sulfonic acid derivative at a high monomer concentration in the absence of a crosslinking agent by using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator.
CONSTITUTION: A component (A) of formula I, wherein R is H or CH3 and R' is H, an alkali metal or NH4, e.g., acrylate salt, and a component (B) of formula II, wherein R and R' are the same as above, X is O or NH and Y is a C2W10 linear or branched alkylene, e.g., 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate salt, in a form of an aqueous solution having a weight ratio (acid base), A/B, of 95/5W70/30, and a total monomer concentration of components A and B of 40wt% to saturation, are copolymerized in the absence of a crosslinking agent by using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator. The present resin has excellent salt resistance and an extremely high water-absorbing capacity, can be used as a water-retaining material in soil conditioning, can be used suitably as a urine-absorbing material for paper diapers, and a blood-absorbing material for sanitary articles.
