Abstract
894,094. Respiratory appliances. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 3823/60. Class 81 (2). In a forced breathing respirator the supply valve is controlled by a pressure-responsive member which is actuated by a flow-meter in accordance with the volume of gas passed to the patient. The control-valve assembly comprises a pivoted member 7 mounted so that it can close either valve 29 or 3 according to its position and it is actuated by a bellows 9, the movable end of which carries a magnet 11. When the bellows is collapsed this magnet approaches the member 7 and attracts it, so that valve 29 is closed, but when the bellows is distended, a fixed magnet 10 predominates and the member 7 is tilted to close valve 3. Gas enters a chamber 2 through a tube 1 and thence passes through valve 3 to an injector 4, where it entrains air, and then flows through a resistance element 16 to the patient. The pressure drop across the element 16 is communicated to a diaphragm 21, dividing two chambers 19, 20, which is consequently moved towards the right at a rate depending on the setting of a needle valve 22. At the end of this movement a plunger 23 engages a valve 24 which allows gas from the supply to pass to the interior of the bellows 9 and cause this to distend until the member 7 moves over to its alternative position. The supply to the patient is thus cut off and his lungs collapse naturally while a flow of gas through pipe 28 opens a valve 27 and extracts the gas from chamber 19. This restores the diaphragm 21 to its original position while, with valve 24 now closed, the contents of the bellows escape through an adjustable valve 13. The bellows collapse slowly under the pressure of a spring 14 until the original conditions are restored. Since the rate of movement of the diaphragm 21 is constant for any given setting of the valve 22 the time during which inspiration is continued depends on the volume of gas passed to the patient. The duration of exhalation is determined by the setting of the valve 13.
