Abstract
An aqueous organosilicon composition is made by admixing a silane of the formula <FORM:0882062/IV (a)/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl radical, R is an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl radical or the radical -OR1, a is an integer of at least 3, and x is 0, 1 or 2, with water or water in admixture with a mutually miscible solvent. The silane starting materials are described in Specifications 795,984 and 882,096. Solvents specified are enthanol, propanol, butanol, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane. Siloxanes containing terminal Si-boned -OH and/or -OR1 radicals can be recovered from the compositions by concentrating to remove water, solvent (if present), and alkanol formed during the hydrolysis. Similar siloxanes, but of a more uniform chain length, can be obtained by co-equilibrating a cyclic aminoalkylsiloxane (as described in Specification 882,069) with an aminoalkyldialkoxysilane or with an aminoalkylarylalkoxysilane or with water. The siloxanes can be reacted with an amino- or phenol-aldehyde, urethane, epoxy or polyamide resin. Examples describe the preparation of (1, 4, 5) d -aminobutylmethylpolysiloxane hydrolyzate; (2, 3) g -aminopropylmethylpolysiloxane hydrolyzate; (6) ethoxy-terminated d -aminobutylmethylpolysiloxanes; (8) copolymers of aminopropylmethylsiloxanes and phenol-formaldehyde, epoxy, urethane or polyamide resins; (9) alkoxy-containing g -aminopropylsiloxanes; (10, 13) hydroxy-containing g -aminopropylsiloxanes; (11) bis(g -aminopropyldiethoxy)disiloxane; hydroxy- and ethoxy-terminated g -aminopropylsiloxanes. Uses: the aqueous solutions find use (i) as sizes or finishes for inorganic oxide fillers to be used in conjunction with thermosetting resins in making composite articles and laminates, as described in Specification 882,058, and (ii) for modifying thermosetting resins, as described in Specification 816,056. The siloxanes per se or dimethylsiloxanes modified therewith find use as lubricants, as described in Specification 882,054. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 795,894.
