Abstract
Alpha olefins of formula CH2=CHR, where R is hydrogen, an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms or an aryl group, are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst containing (a) mixed crystals of a chloride of titanium selected from the group consisting of titanium trichloride and titanium dichloride together with at least one metal chloride of a metal of Group 2 to 8 (excepting titanium) and (b) an aluminium derivative selected from the group consisting of aluminium alkyl derivatives and chloralkyl derivatives, the alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms. Specified metal chlorides are those of zinc, molybdenum, aluminium, ferric, magnesium, tin, manganese, nickel and mixtures thereof. Specified aluminium organic compounds are the triethyl, triisobutyl and diethyl chloride. The polymerization may take place in a hydrocarbon diluent, e.g. n-heptane, propane, or aromatic or alicyclic solvents. Ethylene, propylene and styrene are specified olefins. Methanol is used to stop the reaction and to purify the product.ALSO:An alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst contains (a) mixed crystals of a titanium tri- or di-chloride together with at least one metal chloride of Groups II to VIII (excepting titanium) and (b) an aluminium alkyl or chloralkyl, the alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms. Specified metal chlorides are those of zinc, molybdenum, aluminium, ferric, magnesium, tin, manganese, nickel and mixtures thereof. Specified aluminium compounds are the triethyl, triisobutyl and diethyl chloride.
