Classes 103(2) and 108(1) [Also in Group VII] An adjustable safety belt 22, Figs. 2 and 7, stretched across occupants seated in a vehicle having forwardly hinged side doors 12, 14, has its ends fastened to wheeled carriage runners movable along diagonal tracks 40 on the doors, so that if one of the doors is opened the carriage on that side moves upwardly and forwardly in the track and draws the belt away from the seats so that the occupants may get out. When a door is shut the respective carriage moves down its track under gravity bringing the attached end of the belt across the occupants, the carriage movement being assisted by a cable fastened to the carriage and wound round a drum rotated by an electric motor 58. Door switches and limit switches control the motors, and extra latches 52 operated by the door handles lock the carriage in the belt secured position. In a modification, Figs. 7, 8, and 10, the belt 22 may be additionally supported by straps 88 and 90 having hooks 92 which may be attached to pockets 94 on the belt, the straps having their other ends passing around spools 98, 106 rotatable on a fixed shaft 100 against the action of torsion springs 108, 110.
