Abstract

<PICT:0816607/IV (a)/1> A method of making one or more thin bands of a linear synthetic high polymer orientated in a direction other than the length direction of the band, comprises first extruding and stretching lengthwise, while either hot or cold, a tubular film of the polymer, and then cutting up this tubular film along one or more parallel spirals on the surface of the film in a direction other than that of the orientation produced by the stretching process. The Figure illustrates an embodiment in which the tubular film is twisted as well as stretched before being cut longitudinally or spirally, this embodiment being preferred when angles of orientation close to 90 degrees are required. Rotating tubular film 1 is stretched in a drawing die unit which consists of a spherical steel mandrel 2, a rotating die 3, rotating in the same direction as film 1 but at a lesser speed, and a steel rod 5 which is attracted electromagnetically by solenoid 6 and which serves to keep mandrel 2 pressed against die 3. The issuing tubular film passes over the very smooth mandrel 12, which is fixed to spherical mandrel 2, to a ring-formed roller 13 driven by ordinary rollers 14. The rotation of die 3 and roller 13 imparts an angular orientation to the surface of the tubular film in the direction indicated by the arrows 15 (in this case, 45 degrees). The tube then passes over smooth flat mandrel 8 and rollers 9 to a rotating knife 10 which is fixed at the required angle to the axis of the tubular film. If the knife 10 is also fixed at 45 degrees, the film will be orientated at 90 degrees, as shown by arrow 16. The resulting orientated flat film is wound up on winder 11. If angles of orientation below about 70 degrees are required, the tubular film is treated in a similar apparatus but is not twisted.
