Abstract
699,387. Rotary engines and pumps. VICKERS, Inc. Oct. 8, 1951 [Oct. 7, 1950], No. 23338/51. Class 110(ii) A reversible engine or pump, of the vane type, has inlet and outlet chambers on opposite sides of the rotor 24 and a sealing plate 64 pressed against one side of the rotor by fluid under pressure which is supplied through a separate port 70. The pressure source may be the delivery fluid, when the apparatus acts as a pump; the working fluid supply, when a motor, or a separate supply. A motor 10, Fig. 1, has a plate 64 under spring pressure 72 and supplied, as by a pump 104, Fig. 7, through the port 70, some fluid passing axially through ducts 84 and interconnected grooves 30, to act in pockets 28 and force outwards the vanes 22. For one direction of rotation, fluid enters a port 56 and passes through a duct 54, to inlet ports 48, 50, to supply working chambers 44, 46. The fluid is exhausted through ports 60, 62, groove 82 and outlet 71. The cam ring 12 has an inner contour which, substantially, is elliptical, forming the two working chambers 44, 46. The rotor 24 is splined to a shaft 32 carried on radial and thrust bearings 36, 38 with a seal 40 between. Leakage fluid along the shaft is drained away through a port 42. Dowels 88 connect the casing parts 16, 12 and plate 64 rigidly. Oil seals 90, 92, 94 are provided. Specification 689.220 is referred to. Fig. 7 shows a plant comprising a reversible motor 10, as above, which is supplied by a pump 104 through a line 110 and four-way control valve 114 by way of line 120 and inlet 56. The exhaust 71 leads back to a reservoir 108 by way of line 122, valve 114 and line 125. The port 70 is supplied by a line 130 at a pressure higher (by about 30 1bs. per square inch) than the pressure fluid led to the motor. If the pressure difference is higher, a ball-valve 134 opens. A pressure-relief valve 124 is provided. Reversal of the motor 10 is effected by changing over the fluid flows through the valve 112.
