Abstract

668,010. Universal joints. JAEGAR MACHINE CO. March 31, 1950 [April 22, 1949], No. 8118/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group II] Apparatus for supporting and driving a rotatable mixer drum 2 comprises cradle rollers 3 at one end and a driven trunnion shaft 20 at the other end coupled to the drum by a flexible joint which compensates for axial misalignment between the drum 2 and shaft 20. The shaft 20 is supported in roller, bearings 21, 22 in a housing 17 in which it carries a gear 16, keyed thereto, which is driven from an engine 7 through gearing contained in housing 13 communicating with housing 17, which housings may be filled with oil. The coupling between the shaft 20 and the drum 2 comprises a spider 25 keyed to the shaft and provided with notches 34 in its periphery which engage in driving connection with lugs 35 upon a member 36 carried by the drum 2. The member 36 is formed with a bearing sleeve 38 which is supported by a rubber sleeve 40 carried by a hub 26 on the spider 25. The driving notches and lugs 34, 35 engage with sufficient play to allow for any lateral movement between the shaft 20 and the drum 2 resulting from misalignment, which is absorbed by the rubber sleeve 40. The drum can be removed from its mounting by axial displacement, bolts and lugs 37 being provided to prevent accidental removal.
