Abstract
613,739. Transport aircraft. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., LEATHER, G. B., and CRABBS, W. A. June 28, 1946, No. 19457. [Class 4] A transport aircraft is provided with a fuselage having an aft tail-carrying portion of substantially less depth than the forward part, the portion where the forward and aft parts merge having a ventral loading opening, and a tricycle type landing gear, the nose and main landing wheels of which are capable of differential upward and downward movement for the purpose of increasing the loading height as determined by the height A of the rearward edge 6 of the loading opening 5 from the ground. In the form shown the loading opening is provided with a hinged closure member 7, the rear edge of which may be lowered to the ground so that the member may serve as a loading ramp. The fuselage is tilted by varying the lengths of the undercarriage legs, by the withdrawal therefrom or supply thereto of pressure fluid, or by partially retracting the nose wheel leg. To avoid the use of an abnormally long closure member 7, the upper rearward portion of the opening 5 may be closed by subsidiary doors arranged to open laterally outwards in opposite directions, or alternatively, the whole of the opening may be provided with such doors, a separate ramp being used for loading purposes.
