Abstract
566,385. Making piston &c. rings. BRITISH PISTON RING CO., Ltd., TWIGGER, T. R., and JUDD, J. A. April 1, 1943, No. 5211. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Piston and like packing rings are made from porous material, the density of which is controlled according to the conditions required in service. The density ranges from 6.1 to 7.3. The rings may be made from a base of powdered ferrous metal by cold pressing and sintering, or by hot pressing with or without subsequent sintering. The material may be as described in Specifications 538,227, [Group II], and 560,483. Graphite may be added and any or all of the following alloying elements may be incorporated : nickel, copper, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, titanium, manganese and phosphorous. The special contour may be imparted to the rings during or prior to sintering as described in Specification 551,232 and in a reducing or neutral atmosphere as described in Specification 558,408, or the shape may be imparted during the pressing operation as described in Specification 538,679, or by a repressing operation at a non-oxidising temperature as described in Specification 552,532. Sintering at 1050‹ C. for 1¢ hours, 1075‹ C. for 1 hour and at 1100‹ C. for ¢ hour all yield the.same density, the other conditions being constant. In a given pressure an increase of 20‹ C. in the sintering temperature or of from 30 to 60 minutes in the time raises the density 0.2. Raising the pressure from 40 to 50 tons per square inch increases the density from 6.5 to 6.7 and a further increase of 10 tons yields a density of 6.9. Particles of dendritic shape result in a higher density than spheroidal particles.
