559,623. Gauging roughness of surfaces. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and TUPLIN, W. A. Aug. 21, 1942, No. 11771. [Class 106 (ii)] An instrument for determining the roughness of surfaces, of the kind in which relative movement takes place between a trailing member in the form of a fine-pointed stylus e and the surface d to be tested, so that vertical movements of the tracing member indicate the roughness is characterized in that the support for the tracer member has associated with it two or more independently movable and appropriately-spaced rollers or skid members which rest on the surface to be tested and act upon the support through the medium of a balance lever or through a system of such levers. As shown in Fig. 1, the stylus e is pivotally or otherwise carried by a support c, which is itself supported by a pair of rollers a<SP>1</SP> through the medium of a balance lever f and a knife edge g<SP>1</SP>, the rollers being carried by arms a pivoted to member c. In Fig. 3, the rollers are replaced by skids h, h<SP>1</SP>, spaced longitudinally instead of laterally. More than two rollers or skids may be employed, the lever system being suitably modified.
