[Class 78, (v)] A capstan, winch &c. of the type having means to prevent rotation, in one direction, has a winding drum or pulley mounted on a vertical axis and provided with one or more circumferential wedge-shaped grooves.to receive the rope. Fig. 1 shows a drum 4 having two such grooves 5 and journalled on an upright spigot 3 forming part of a base 1. The drum is bolted to a pinion wheel 6 gearing with a spur wheel 7 on a shaft 8 journalled in a pillar 11 forming part of a cover 2 bolted to the base 1. The shaft 8 has a square pit 13 at the top to receive an operating handle stub, and a cap 14 having a similar pit 15 is fixed over the drum 5, for direct operation when gear drive is not required. A pawl 16 biased by a spring 18 holds the pinion 6 and drum against return, and an eccentric-actuated triangular pivoted lever strikes a pin 19 on the pawl to retain it out of engagement with the pinion 6 when desired. On the outside of the pillar 11 is freely mounted a pulley 12 about which is trained the rope in its passage from one groove 5 to the other. In a modification the drum has both a wedge groove and an ordinary barrel, and is driven by a hand-wheel through a two-speed gear, the gear employed depending on the direction in which the hand-wheel is turned. A stationary stripper extends into the groove, and a spring-pressed or fixed jockey pulley bears on the rope to hold it in the groove. The grooves 5 may be of different diameters and different widths to accommodate different sizes of rope, and the groove edges may be undulatory. The external steel parts of the winch may be of stainless steel.
