Abstract
355,117. Liquid-fuel burners. GILBERT & BARKER MANUFACTURING CO., Cold Springs Avenue, West Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Oct. 31, 1930, No. 32832. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1929. [Class 75 (i).] A hollow conical fuel jet discharged from a pressure atomizing nozzle 20 is impinged upon by two diametrically opposite air streams so that the fuel jet is flattened to become approximately elliptical in cross section. The air streams are discharged from passages 45 in a member 42 at the end of the air supply tube 15 communicating with a fan 17. The inlet ends of the passage 45 are approximately oval and the outlet ends 50 are approximately rectangular. The walls 51 converge to a line substantially ahead of the nozzle and the velocity of the air streams is somewhat greater than that of flame propagation so that the flame starts at a distance from the nozzle. The air streams, which are at a comparatively low pressure, supply all the air required for combustion. The angle of impingement of the air streams is preferably 90‹ but this angle may be varied and, by a suitable choice of atomizing nozzle, the flame may be made to fill a firebox. In the apparatus shown the fuel is supplied by a pump 23 on the fan shaft through an electromagnetically-operated valve 27 and a byepass valve 28, and is ignited by a gas pilot tube 25 projecting through a hole 44 in the member 42. Fig. 17 shows a suitable atomizing nozzle containing a double-threaded member 41 and a perforated plug 39.
