Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO BAG HANDLES
(71) I, GERARD MARQUIS DU CDORDAY, a citizen of the United States of America, of, 10871 Thorley Road, Santa Ana,
California 92705, United States of America, do hereby declare the invention, for which
I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:: This invention relates to handles of synthetic plastics material for securing to carrier bags and is particularly concerned with handles of the kind, hereinafter referred to as "the kind described", comprising two separate apertured sections of similar shape which are adapted, on their outside surfaces, to be welded or otherwise secured to the opposite sides of a bag and are provided, on their inside surfaces with connecting elements by which the two parts can be detachably secured to one another when pressed together to form a composite handle with a central aperture, which the handle also serves to close the top of the bag to which it is secured.
Because the two sections are of similar shape it is often difficult to prise them apart when it is required to open the bag and it is therefore, proposed, according to the present invention, to provide each section with a web which extends across a small portion of the aperture therein and is so positioned that the web on one section is accessible through the aperture of the other section and viceversa to enable pressure to be applied simultaneously in opposite directions to the respective sections to separate them.
One embodiment of the present invention will be described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views showing the separated sections of the handle from the inside;
Figures 3 and 4 are views from opposite sides of the assembled handle;
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are a top plan view, an end view and a bottom plan view respectively of the assembled handle; and
Figures 8 and 9 are sections taken on lines 8-8 and 9-9 respectively of Fig. 4.
As shown in the drawings, the handle is formed in two sections 1 and 2 which are identical in shape, with one section constituting a mirror image of the other. Each section is moulded from synthetic plastics material and comprises an upper portion which includes a grip portion 3 and a hook portion 4, and a lower portion in the form of a connecting strip 5 the outer surface of which is adapted to be secured by welding or other suitable means to the inside surface of the upper end of the bag. The inner surface of the upper portion of each section is formed with a plurality of recesses 6 separated by ribs 7 and when the two sections are combined to form a handle the recesses and the ribs on both sections cooperate to provide the assembled handle with a cellular internal structure.Each section is formed with an aperture 8 below the grip portion 3 and with a plurality of studs 9 and recesses 10 which cooperate with matching recesses and studs in the other section when the sections are pressed together, to retain the sections in their assembled condition with the apertures 8 registering with one another for the passage of the user's hand.
One end of the grip portion 3 on the section 1 is extended downward to form a web 11 which extends across the top of one end of the aperture 8 and also projects into the corresponding part of the aperture 8 in the section 2, as shown in Fig. 9. Similarly, one end of the grip portion 3 on the section 2 is extended downward to form a web 12 which extends across the top of the other end of the aperture 8 and projects into the plane of the section 1, as shown in Fig. 8.
With the sections secured together as shown in Figs. 3 to 9 to form the assembled handle it is only necessary to exert pressure on the web 11 from the side shown in Fig. 3 and on the web 12 from the side shown in
Fig. 4 to separate the sections and enable the bag to be opened.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:- 1. A bag handle of the kind described wherein each section is provided with a web which extends across a small portion of the

Claims (4)
1. A bag handle of the kind described wherein each section is provided with a web which extends across a small portion of the aperture therein and it is so positioned that the web on one section is accessible through the aperture in the other section and viceversa to enable pressure to be applied simultaneously in opposite directions to the respective sections to separate them.
2. A bag handle according to Claim 1 wherein said webs are so positioned that when the sections are secured together the webs appear at opposite ends of the aperture in the assembled handle.
3. A bag handle according to Claim 1 or 2 wherein each web projects out of the plane of its own section into the plane of the other section when the sections are secured to gether to form the handle.
4. A bag handle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
